Arla Foods, the UK’s largest farmer-owned dairy co-operative, has today announced the appointment of Matin Macdonald to its UK senior sales team as Senior Director, Growth Channels.

In this newly created role, Matin will be responsible for further developing the business’s e-commerce strategy, together with exploring new opportunities for the convenience and value retail arms of the business. This is the first time that sales for these three parts of the business have been brought together under one leadership.

With online food sales now accounting for 13 per cent of the entire British grocery market, Matin is particularly well placed to explore the opportunities for the e-commerce side of the business.

Matin joins Arla Foods from Wessanen UK, where he was Commercial Director, UK and Ireland. He has also previously held roles at Reckitt Benckiser and Unilever, where he progressed through senior grocery sales roles to Account Controller and Channel Director.

Matin will report to Duncan Malyon, Arla UK’s Senior Vice President of Sales.

Duncan Malyon said: “I am delighted that Matin is joining the Arla senior sales team. His experience will be invaluable as we explore the many opportunities for growth in the business. We have long seen the potential to further expand the e-commerce side of the business, and the Covid-19 pandemic has seen a significant change in consumer shopping habits which has seen these opportunities grow further.”

Matin Macdonald, Senior Director, Growth Channels, said: “I am very excited to be joining Arla at this time of great potential for the business. This is a pivotal moment not just for the dairy industry but the whole food sector. As the third biggest food company in the UK, Arla has an incredible voice and potential to drive real change in the industry. I have also long admired the farmer co-operative model at Arla, which is a key part of why the business has been so successful.”
