Award winning independent retailer, Dean Holborn, has launched his newly refurbished store in Nutfield.
Holborn’s in South Nutfield, the sister store of Holborn’s in Redhill, Surrey, has been a family run community led store since 2005. Holborn’s has been a valued independent retailer with P&H for over 20 years, and P&H have worked together with owner Dean Holborn to deliver a refurbishment to the store which offers the best customer experience possible.
The re-fit and construction work took 3 weeks to complete and includes new fittings, flooring and lighting. In the interim, Dean and his team set up a temporary shop in the store stockroom to ensure he remained trading every day throughout the refit.
Throughout the refurbishment P&H have acted as a consultant to Holborn’s on store layout, range and merchandising to ensure the newly refurbished store can capitalise on the shifting consumer trends within convenience. The new design is mission focussed rather than category driven to inspire shoppers and enhance their shopping experience.
Since the store first opened, the improved merchandising and store layout is already having a positive impact on sales. Total sales have risen 13%, with alcohol sales up 46% and crisps and snacks 54% compared to a year ago.
High-tech additions have also made the store ‘greener’ and even more customer-friendly. All lights in the shop are low energy LED, while an enlarged chiller section has new and more efficient refrigeration, both working to reduce the stores overall carbon footprint. Despite this increase in refrigeration, the first energy bill received was £150 cheaper than prior to the refit.
Given the recent implementation of the EUTPDII laws, Dean has also made changes to the traditional tobacco gantry. Tobacco products are now stocked in drawers under the counter which ensures staff remain customer facing.
The movement of the tobacco stock has also freed up some prime visual space behind the till. Dean plans to utilise this space to stock local wines, and premium and boutique spirits, further expanding on the store’s alcohol offering to the local community.
