One of Ireland’s leading cheese producers has set its sights on major expansion in the UK and has targeted the cash and carry/wholesale sector as a key growth area.

Dairygold Food Ingredients, based in Cork but with state of the art manufacturing sites at Crewe and Leeds, is strengthening its sales force to accelerate growth.

The UK sales team has been boosted by several key appointments in recent months. They include Andrew Marriott as Business Development Manager for the cash & carry and contract catering channels.

Tim Sparkes has joined the company to focus on delivered wholesale/foodservice, with Tony Kourellias and Antonio Altieri boosting Dairygold’s presence in the regional cash & carry, delivered wholesale and delivered foodservice sectors.

Terry Cunningham, Dairygold Food Ingredients UK Sales and Marketing Director, said the appointments underlined the company’s ambitions for sustained growth in the cash and carry/wholesale channel.

He said: “We already have a strong presence in this sector but want to build on the success already achieved and grow recognition as the company to deal with quickly by introducing new flavours, product formats and broadening our customer base.”

The company has the size, stature and manufacturing capability to do so. Dairygold Food Ingredients accounts for approximately 17% of Ireland’s milk output through a network of 3,100 dairy farmers with milk production currently running in excess of 1 billion litres per annum.

Cunningham adds: “We produce around 40,000 metric tonnes of Cheddar every year. Cheddar is core to our business because it accounts for just over half of the UK cheese market and there is scope for us to grow our share of this market.”

Across the Pennines at Leeds, production is concentrated on soft varieties of cheese, including mascarpone and Philadelphia-style cheese. These are used in a variety of products including quiches, sandwiches, cheesecakes, and sauces.

As it grows, Dairygold is committed to the highest possible quality standards. Cunningham maintains that by specializing in “our core market sector” helps the company to maintain its customer focus on cash and carry, wholesale and foodservice.

“It means that we understand the market we serve and can support the cash and carry/wholesale sector with the very best levels of quality, not just in relation to the products but in the support that we provide,” he says.

Quality, it seems, lies at the heart of Dairygold’s business. Earlier this year the company was awarded prestigious firsts at the world famous Nantwich Show for its Block Mature White Cheddar, Grated Red Leicester and Grated Mature White Cheddar.
