DS Smith Packaging reaps awards for design excellence

1faj8113.jpgIn the last few years alone, DS Smith Packaging has won nearly 80 awards covering all aspects of design, print and customer service. This phenomenal rate of success shows no signs of slowing down, with a recent cascade of awards from the UK Packaging Awards and the Worldstar and Flexotech International Print & Innovations competitions.

DS Smith Packaging is Supplier of the Year 2008
At the UK Packaging Awards event held by Packaging News on November 3rd 2008, DS Smith Packaging was singled out as the UK’s supplier of the year. The focus was on DS Smith Packaging’s site in Launceston, which has become a market leader in just-in-time supply to a range of customers as well as a top supplier of postal packaging for items such as books, music and electronics. The award illustrates the fact that great packaging design has to evolve out of a deep understanding of customers’ businesses. Launceston, in common with other DS Smith Packaging plants, is able to use a set of sophisticated software tools called ‘PackRight’ to design packaging, which helps customers take cost out of the supply chain as well as increase sales and profits.

Save costs through corrugated packaging
Take, for example, the 2007 Worldstar winning ‘Office Depot’ pack from DS Smith Packaging Clay Cross. This 100% recyclable pack claimed the Supply Chain Solution award at the 2008 UK Packaging Awards. It replaces a number of less environmentally sustainable packs and enables a range of promotional materials such as posters and leaflets to be completely protected from creasing or other damage. Its use has resulted in significant savings in distribution and delivery costs as well as other benefits such as better branding and faster packing times.

World-class design Only five Worldstar awards were granted to companies in the UK in 2008, and DS Smith Packaging won three of them! A transit pack for Land Rover showed how to use a minimum of material to achieve maximum protection for an expensive cowling unit. A new pack for a high cost alloy car wheel for Roll Royce Motors won acclaim as a highly efficient, fully telescopic and selflocking transit case. A tissue paper dispenser for Peter Grant introduced a brand new technique into corrugated manufacturing in the UK by applying a moisture-proof silver liner to the outside of the corrugated board.

Sacks appeal
DS Smith Sacks triumphed once again in the 2008 Flexotech International Print & Innovation Awards, winning “Best Print” in the Sacks and Corrugated pre-print liner category. The award for Blue Dragon’s Sushi Rice bag demonstrates the way high quality print is helping to increase the impact and merchandising appeal of paper sack packaging in store.

Top position
To cap it all in 2008, Tony Thorne, Chief Executive of DS Smith Plc, was nominated as the foremost industry leader in Packaging News Power 50. His ‘leader of the pack’ status was earned by achieving impressive business results in tough trading conditions. This award is also symbolic, perhaps, of DS Smith Packaging’s leadership position in the corrugated packaging market – itself a result of constant, determined hard work with customers who want to use their corrugated packaging to win competitive advantage and protect profits.
