Four new Cat® lift trucks and a bespoke appliance clamp that allows a forklift to carry double the load, all supplied by Impact, have introduced unprecedented levels of efficiency for polystyrene product manufacturer Styrene Packaging & Insulation (SPI).
The tailored Hallam ATIB attachment’s eight-foot-wide span is large enough to lift two of the firm’s standard polystyrene blocks at once, significantly reducing the number of trips required and saving time.
Craig Goodsell, Transport Manager at Styrene Packaging & Insulation, says: “We approached Impact with an idea for a clamp that would change the way we work and help our fleet become more efficient. “In the past we’ve had off-the-shelf attachments, but they’ve never fitted seamlessly into our operations.
Impact has ensured we have exactly the right implement for our needs. “This tool allows trucks to carry twice as many blocks as before and reduces the number of trips they need to make to and from the production line. And when it’s not in use, the clamp folds down to four feet, which makes mobility easy.”
SPI’s new Cat trucks – one 2.5 tonne and three 1.8 tonne diesel powered forklifts – join a 15-strong materials handling fleet, including eight Cat® Lift Truck diesel forklifts delivered by Impact last year.
He adds: “The new forklifts are perfect for our busy site and mean we are in the best position to take on extra work that comes in.”
Each forklift at the company’s Bradford headquarters is in use up to 12 hours per day, five days each week.
SPI’s polystyrene blocks are transported by its forklifts from production to storage for a 24-hour curing period, before being taken to the cutting line. The company’s finished products are then loaded on to outbound trucks for delivery.
Established in 1976 as an expanded polystyrene manufacturer, SPI provides custom packaging for a variety of sectors, including food, horticulture and domestic appliances as well as a range of insulation products to the construction industry.
