As reported in the national press the Health Secretary wants to ban the sale of energy drinks to all children under 16 – putting him on a fresh collision course with Boris Johnson.

Matt Hancock has told the Cabinet he has decided to slap the age limit on the products high in caffeine and sugar such as Monster and Red Bull. It follows a consultation by the Department of Health into how energy drinks were damaging kids’ health, sparking headaches, hyperactivity and obesity.

But the move risks another confrontation between Mr Hancock and the Prime Minister, who he is fervently backing.

Boris has pledged to review all ‘sin taxes’ and regulations in a bid to roll back the nanny state
