A shock cross-party alliance between Tory rebels, Labour and the Scottish National Party has blocked Government’s plans for longer Sunday shop opening hours.
George Osborne’s plans to let local authorities decide who can open on Sundays and for how long faced widespread opposition in Parliament, and also from trade bodies, trades unions and religious groups. The rebellion upset the Chancellor, who had seen the proposed change as a boost for jobs.
SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson welcomed the news. He told the BBC the party supported Sunday trading but not on the back of poorly paid shop workers and said it would welcome discussions on how to protect staff rights.
