001Opies, one of the oldest family-owned food companies in the UK, is sponsoring local up-and-coming archer Phil Gower. Phil, 15, from Canterbury, recently came first at the Indoor Nationals in the Boys Under 16s category and second overall. He is looking to use the money to buy a new compound bow and accessories, as well as to pay for travel to competitions. Phil is delighted with the sponsorship and hopes that it will enable him to continue to compete at a high level in both the British team, which he joined last year, and compete internationally at the FITA Youth World Archery Championships in 2009. Co sponsors Stan of aim4sports.com are also supplying arrows and other kit for Phil to use this season.

Opies first began as Bennett Opie back in 1880 – founded by the eponymous Cornishman who set off to make his fortune in London with just £5 in his pocket. It is now run by his two great grandsons – William and Philip Opie – who are both happy and excited to be supporting Phil, whom they discovered at the local archery club where William’s son Anthony competed – Canterbury Archers.

William Opie, comments: “Having watched Phil’s dedication over the last few years means this sponsorship will be able to give something back to the local community and help a keen sportsman achieve his goals.  We hope that it will allow Phil to go all the way and fulfill his dreams of finishing in the top echelons both in National and international events. Watching anybody shoot arrows at 90 meters with most of them in the gold is impressive.”

Phil Gower, says: “I am delighted to be so generously sponsored by Opies for the second consecutive year.  My dream is to eventually compete for Great Britain in London 2012 and without this sponsorship my Olympic journey would be much tougher.”
