Andrew Moore, Fundraising President and Chief Merchandising Officer, Asda was on hand to welcome guests at the stunning London Hilton on Park Lane. A special tribute was then paid to departing GroceryAid Director General, Gillian Barker, who retires at the end of November. The esteemed Steve Rider returned as event host and guests were entertained by the charismatic former England manager Kevin Keegan and popular comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner.

During the event guests had the opportunity to win the ‘Ultimate Sporting Passport’. This mouth-watering prize included tickets to each of the following; Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup (donated by CPM), FA Cup Final (Coca- Cola European Partners), Wimbledon (Britvic UK plc), Lords Cricket (Accolade Wines Ltd) and British Touring Cars Championship (Tesco plc) plus £1000 towards travel and accommodation (Euro Food Brands and Stateside Foods). Our thanks go to everyone that who part in the draw, which raised nearly £17,000. Congratulations to winner Charlie Foster (Kellogg Company) who has plenty of excitement to look forward to throughout 2017.

Alongside the £20 Draw, guests took part in a variety of fundraising events including a silent auction, our popular raffle and a live auction with charismatic double act Phil Tufnell and Alan Brazil. Our thanks go to The Co-operative Group, J Sainsbury plc, Tesco Ltd and Waitrose Ltd who kindly donated the live auction lots.

It was a memorable afternoon and we would like to extend our thanks to all of our sponsors, the companies who donated prizes or product and to everyone who attended.

The winners of the 2016 Achievement Awards were also announced at the Sporting Heroes Luncheon – a record 311 companies received an award in the ninth year. Congratulations to all those who have done so much to help raise awareness and monies for the charity. Next year the Annual Sporting Heroes Luncheon will be held on Friday 10th November 2017.
