Welcome to the March-April issue of Wholesale Manager, our second bi-monthly issue of 2014.
We’re well into the second quarter now and spring has definitely arrived – the mornings are light, the days are warmer, the skies are bluer and there’s a pronounced lift to the country’s mood, encouraging consumers to go out and enjoy themselves. It’s definitely good news for the UK’s delivered wholesalers and cash ‘n’ carries and the people they serve.

As our Spring Cleaning feature makes clear, household cleaning products come into their own at this time of year as distress purchases in independent retail outlets. In our rain-soaked islands, when the spring sunshine finally comes consumers run for the cleaning cupboard when they notice how dirty their homes are looking. The big date for Spring Cleaning is when the clocks go forward. This year it was on Sunday March 30th, the start of the traditional ‘Spring Clean’ period, when the longer days and the sunshine show up the grubby windows and paintwork after the winter, and people feel they really can’t leave it a day longer to do something about it!
In today’s busy cash & carries and delivered wholesalers’ warehouses, productivity is everything. The warehouse is arguably the most important part of a cash ‘n’ carry or delivered wholesale operation, besides the management office and purchasing. After the long winter months it could probably do with a good clean up. Not only that, if you don’t keep the warehouse well equipped with up to date and properly maintained equipment all year round, performance, productivity and safety will suffer, so this is as good a time as any to sort it out.
