David-NickissonLeading Dutch snack food company Kuriya Sushi BV has appointed Cheshire – based Nicco Foods to represent it in the UK and build a new market segment – for frozen sushi.

Headed by managing director David Nickisson, the eleven-strong Nicco Foods team expects total turnover to exceed £15m. in 2009.

The sales agency represents more than 20 companies, most of them from Mainland Europe and operates in the retail, foodservice and manufacturing sectors.

“This is an exciting opportunity because frozen sushi is little known in the UK and with chilled products there is a huge risk of wastage,” said Mr. Nickisson.

There will be three pack sizes for retailers (7, 8 & 10) pieces) and two for foodservice (28 & 36 pieces). A third foodservice pack – wrapped chicken parcels – will follow this year. All the microwaveable selections can be served fresh within ten minutes of leaving a freezer.

They are manufactured in a multi-million Euro, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Northern Holland which has BRC certification and already supplies its home market, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Russia, Norway and Portugal, with both branded and private label products.

Eighty per cent of the manufacturing process is automated, with all the products being hand finished.

“This hand finishing means process workers can ensure every piece is beautifully presented,” said Mr. Nickisson.
