Midlands firm Oakland International has been announced as the winner in the Small Company category in the  West Midlands Carbon Reduction Awards at the Business in the Community’s 30th anniversary celebrations held at Edgbaston Stadium on Tuesday 12th June.

Judged on their overall management, development, resourcing and delivery of carbon reduction initiatives and resulting positive impact across the business, Oakland International was commended for their high standard of entry by the award judges.

David Hoey, HR and Purchasing Director at Oakland International stated: “We are extremely honoured to have won this award, and delighted to formally be recognised as an environmentally sustainable distribution operator within the retail distribution sector.”

Many of the innovative environmental initiatives underway at the Redditch based firm include an ongoing installation of efficient LED lighting, an electric vehicle charge unit installation, and solar panels that are anticipated to generate 39,304kWh per year. These solar panels are also currently exceeding their expected output. The firm has also recently installed an energy monitoring and management system to track each building’s energy performance, providing live data feeds to enable the energy management of both high and low performing areas of the business. The next step will be to display this live data via a plasma screen in reception, with the intention to engage and inform employees and visitors about energy usage on-site. Additional investment of £37,000 has helped extend the firm’s existing reed bed sewage system, supporting their organic business growth and catering for increased numbers of employees at the Redditch site.

Kath Turner, Oakland International’s Renewable Project Coordinator commented: “We are extremely delighted to have won this award, and want to continue delivering on environmental projects.”

A multi temperature supply chain specialist in logistics, warehousing and distribution, replacement of energy rich solutions has been at the core to the firm’s continued success, passing savings down through their extensive supply chain operations for the benefit of all. With a new solar panel monitoring system due to be installed, the company will be able to monitor and access data on solar panel performance as well as provide information on energy savings achieved.

BITC’s Head of Membership West Midlands, Steve Fitzgerald, commented: “The judges were very impressed with the overall quality of this year’s entries and found the judging process difficult with such a high quality field. Oakland International can be justly proud of their Award against such strong opposition.”
