Wholesalers help give youngsters a start

Welcome to the Autumn issue of Wholesale Manager. Here we are heading for the fourth quarter. It’s been a strange old year, with the long winter, the late spring and the blazing summer. Here’s to a sunny autumn before the fog and snow start up again!

Speaking of which, the British Industrial Truck Association says demand for warehouse trucks in the wholesale and distribution sector has nearly recovered to pre-recession levels, an indicator that things are looking up for this part of the economy. The latest Close Brothers Business Barometer supports this forecast, saying 36% of respondents in wholesale and distribution expect their business to expand in the next year.

It’s tough being young and trying to find work. The IGD is bringing the food and grocery industry together during September to give out of work 16-24 year-olds pre-employment training during its Skills for Work Month. The initiative builds on last year’s Skills for Work Week, which reached out to thousands of young unemployed people.

According to the IGD, numerous food and drink-related companies will be offering site visits for young people to find out about the jobs on offer, learn how to enhance their CV and practise being interviewed. As well as doing some talent spotting, there is the chance for employers to give something back to the local community. Wholesalers involved in this praiseworthy initiative are understood to include Appleby Westward, Blakemore, Booker, Brakes, Compass and Musgrave.
