The popularity of Oriental food, particularly Chinese, has grown significantly in the UK in recent years. Wing Yip is now widely recognised as the UK’s leading Oriental grocer, supplying restaurants and takeaways across the country. Employing more than 300 staff, the company’s four superstores in Birmingham (headquarters), Manchester, Cricklewood and Croydon are a one stop shop for the catering trade and oriental food enthusiasts. Customers can also access more than 500 Wing Yip products, over 100 Oriental recipes and store information by visiting www.wingyipstore.co.uk.
Wing Yip is best known by chefs and caterers for its own brand sauces which were created to meet demand for authenticity, and the catering range now comprises more than 20 products. These food service sauces for the catering and restaurant trade are available nationally through appointed distributors.
The key to success of the sauces is the flavour profile, which allows chefs in any catering environment to produce Chinese and Oriental dishes of the highest standard. Favourites such as black bean, spicy Szechuan, sweet and sour and Chinese curry are used in restaurants and takeaways every day.
Created by Mr Wing Yip, who has made such a massive contribution to the popularity of Oriental food, the introduction of the retail range was a natural progression and now authentic sauces can be found in leading supermarkets, giving amateur cooks and food enthusiasts a chance to produce their own Oriental dishes at home.
As well as the own brand sauce range, Wing Yip stores stock an impressive selection of sauces from the Far East as well as spices, noodles, rice, fresh vegetables and more diverse items such as chicken feet. Everything for a Chinese banquet can be found with a wide range of Chinese tableware, woks of all sizes, steamers and cooking utensils.
Fresh fish and seafood is delivered daily to each store and there are frozen prawns of all sizes, along with many other types of shellfish.
A wide variety of authentic Chinese soups can also be found at Wing Yip. Flavours include Chinese chicken and sweetcorn, Szechuan hot and sour and for vegetarians and vegans, the Chinese vegetable soup range offers plenty to choose from.
Wing Yip boasts an excellent choice of drinks to compliment any Chinese menu. Exotic teas include Green Jasmine and Oolong from China, as well as Korean Ginseng tea. Leading Oriental beer brands from China, Thailand and Singapore are also on offer for those wanting something a little stronger.
This year, Wing Yip launched its first authentic Thai range of condiments, pastes and ingredients aimed at Oriental food enthusiasts. The Mai Siam range includes Red and Green Thai Curry Pastes, Massaman Curry Paste, Thai Tom Yum Paste in 220g size jars, Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce, Thai Fish Sauce, Pad Thai Sauce, Thai Sriracha Sauce (all 200ml) Coconut Milk (400ml) and Thai Rice noodles (250g per packet).
The Mai Siam range achieved gold stars at the prestigious Great Taste Awards 2008, in the Asian Sauce for Cooking category, winning gongs for its Tom Yum and Thai Red curry pastes. Every product awarded a gold has been through three layers of judging and to achieve three stars, the products have been tasted on at least six occasions by a total of 22 experts.
Chairman, Mr Wing Yip has recently been presented with two coveted awards in recognition of his outstanding business success and services to the local business economy. Birmingham City University presented him with an honorary doctorate to mark his 36 year contribution to industry in the city.
The company also achieved North West Business of the Year in the Ethnic Minority Business Forum Awards, to celebrate the contribution made by black and ethnic minority businesses.
