Halloween and Bonfire Night sales are benefiting from the commercialisation of an extended “spooky season,” massive social media influence on homewares and food, high engagement from Gen Z and Millennials, experiential agritourism like pumpkin picking, and tie-ins with popular films and TV culture.

Platforms like TikTok and Instagram heavily dictate early consumer trends, fuelling viral food, costume, and home decor concepts that convert directly into retail sales.

Retailers have expanded the sales window well beyond October 31, launching themed merchandise, homewares, and early confectionery displays as early as August and September.

Younger demographics (Millennials and Gen Z) heavily embrace Halloween for hosting parties, home decoration, and themed dining, pushing spending far past traditional children’s trick-or-treating.

The surge in popularity of local pumpkin patches and farm-gate picking has turned simple grocery shopping into a major family and social leisure activity.

Fancy dress and themed food bundle sales experience major jumps due to direct inspiration from trending movies and television series.

Halloween confectionery represents a £263m market (NielsenIQ/Kantar), with 62% of UK households celebrating annually and 20% hosting or attending parties (YouGov). With the holiday falling on a Saturday alongside October half-term, participation is projected to hit record levels.

To capitalise on these trends, wholesalers must stock key formats, specifically sharing bags, tins/tubs, and fun-size packs, to serve distinct purchasing missions.

Sharing bags is the fastest-growing format (+7.1% in 2025, per NIQ), with Mars Wrigley driving the category behind core brands like Maltesers®, M&M’S®, and Galaxy Minstrels®.

Tins and tubs are purchased by 8 million shoppers (Kantar), with nearly half re-buying at Christmas for cross-seasonal loyalty (NIQ).

Fun-size treats are crucial for the 19% of households buying for trick-or-treaters (YouGov). Mars Wrigley holds six of the top 10 fun-size products (NIQ).

“Halloween’s evolution into a mainstream celebration creates tremendous opportunities for wholesalers who approach it strategically,” says Lauren George, External Communications Manager, Mars Wrigley. “By understanding the distinct roles different formats play and ensuring comprehensive ranging across all consumer needs, wholesalers can maximise the occasion’s potential.”

Given that 57% of shoppers plan in the final week (NIQ) and 80% buy fun-size products strictly in the final fortnight (British trends data), stock availability during the late rush is critical.

To drive engagement, Mars Wrigley is launching new Chocolate M&M’S® Minis Funsize, bringing back SKITTLES® Darkside, and running an on-pack Disneyland® Paris experience promotion.

“These growing seasonal traditions of Halloween parties and ‘trick or treat’ create distinct purchasing occasions, and confectionery is at the heart of them,” notes George. “Maintaining stock levels right through the final fortnight is critical.”

Wholesalers are advised to prioritise late-season availability, simplify range choices for independents, offer strong POS merchandising, and leverage half-term footfall.

Seasonal celebrations continue to drive strong confectionery performance, with the UK Halloween market valued at over £65.1m during the six-week 2025 seasonal period (NIQ Discover). To help retailers maximize opportunities across trick-or-treating, hosting, and at-home snacking, Mondelez International has unveiled its 2026 product lineup spanning chocolate, sugar confectionery, and biscuits.

Recognised as one of the fastest-growing confectionery brands (+26.9% YoY per NielsenIQ), the brand is introducing Sour Patch Kids Monster Heads, featuring larger dual-flavour, dual-colour jelly pieces in monster-head shapes. Additionally, Sour Patch Kids Watermelon & Strawberry Treatsize returns after generating £1.3m RSV as the #1 Halloween NPD in 2025 (NielsenIQ Scantrack).

Spooky Gums returns to the Wine Gums range to add playful variety to the sugar confectionery aisle.

Returning core favourites include the Cadbury Treatsize Sharing Selection (223g)—featuring wrapped mini versions of Buttons, Crunchie, Twirl, Fudge, and Freddo—alongside the Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo & Friends sharing pack and standalone Cadbury Fudge treatsize packs.

As the world’s #1 cookie brand (Euromonitor International), OREO is bringing back OREO Spooky, which combines classic OREO taste with orange-coloured creme and Halloween-themed cookie embossing. “Halloween is a pivotal sales opportunity for the confectionery market, and consumers are looking for trusted brands in formats that are fun and easy to share, while embracing the spooky season,” says Susan Nash, Trade Communications Manager at Mondelez International. “Our 2026 range brings together Cadbury treatsize favourites, the return of OREO Spooky, playful Maynards Bassetts packs and the new Sour Patch Kids Monster Heads, giving retailers a strong mix of trusted favourites and seasonal innovation to boost their Halloween sales.”

The UK Confectionery and Chocolate Biscuit Bar market is worth £9.92bn annually (+6.0% YoY, Circana). Growth is propelled by the “lipstick effect”—where consumers seek small, affordable indulgences during economic uncertainty—and a shift toward at-home socialising. In response, sharing formats gained momentum (+10.5% in 2025, Circana), alongside flavour innovations like salted caramel, coffee, and cookie dough (+20% YoY, Circana).

KitKat® Sharing Bars launched in 2025 with three flavours (Double Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Hazelnut), generating £23.1m and recruiting 700,000 new shoppers (Circana).

Valued at £338m annually (Circana), KitKat® is outperforming category growth at +11.4% YoY and expanding market share by 16 bps.

Capitalising on high consumer demand, the new KitKat® 4-Finger Cookie Dough and Cookie Dough Sharing Bar target both on-the-go break moments and family sharing.

“Stores across the UK are trading hard and maximising sales through various innovative strategies, such as creating high impact, occasion-led fixtures or jumping on viral food and drink trends,” says Emma Shannon, Shopper Activation Lead, Nestlé Confectionery. “Make your depot the destination for all the latest confectionery products with consistent availability and clear signage, and they’ll keep coming back.”

Nestlé’s high-impact Formula 1® depot activations yielded a +40% increase in volume and distribution on core KitKat® SKUs across 26 UK wholesale depots.

“With wholesale and convenience crucial for delivering on our partnership ambition to bring F1® to fans beyond the racetrack, we’ve had laser focus on bringing our campaign to life in 26 wholesale depots across the UK through eye-catching point of sale,” notes Shannon.

To maximise sales, Nestlé recommends allocating space equally (50% Sharing / 50% Singles), cross-merchandising near hot drinks or newsstands—since 66% of shoppers say they lack personal break time (Human8)—and leveraging custom POS materials given that 43% of purchases are impulsive.

“Prompt and inspire your customers to take more breaks by having Confectionery available to buy against every break mission, not just your core Confectionery space,” Shannon advises.

Halloween remains a major fixture in the confectionery calendar, driven by trick-or-treating, parties, and at-home celebrations. With the 2026 occasion falling over a weekend alongside October half-term, Perfetti Van Melle emphasises that retailers must offer a balanced range spanning sugar-based, sugar-free, and portion-controlled options.

Health considerations remain important to shoppers, but Halloween is primarily a treating moment. Offering portfolio breadth, from indulgent options to sugar-free choices, ensures retailers accommodate every mission without compromising on consumer trust.

The supplier is introducing Mini Mentos (Strawberry, Green Apple, Orange, and Lemon) in a flexible bag-in-bag format designed for portionability and value. Other key focus areas include sour flavours and multitextured NPD like Experimentos.

As HFSS restrictions limit placement options, seasonal aisles, cross-category displays (e.g., pairing sweets with costumes and bakery), and branded floor stands are critical to capturing impulse sales.

Trusted household names like Fruittella and Chupa Chups remain central to family lists. Building on previous successes—such as the culture-led Chupa Chups x Stranger Things collaboration—the portfolio taps into modern adult and family trends.

Focus remains on practical, long-term enhancements, including packaging recycling guidance, plastic reduction, reduced headspace, and factory solar installations.

“Whether shoppers are buying for trick-or-treating, parties or family nights in, they want products they know and trust,” says Mark Roberts, Marketing & Trade Marketing Director UK at Perfetti Van Melle. “That’s why breadth of range is so important at Halloween – retailers don’t need to choose between indulgence and sugar-free, they need the right balance of both.

“This year, the weekend timing and overlap with half term should give retailers more opportunities to build around the occasion,” Roberts adds. “Lollies, sharing bags and multipacks are especially well placed because they work across the full occasion.”

Sweets and sugar confectionery are outperforming chocolate at Halloween as budget-conscious shoppers seek affordable, reliable treats (IRI Circana). Demand for themed products is accelerating, now driving 30% of total category sales (Circana), with 55% of consumers preferring seasonal items over standard everyday lines (Giraffe Insights).

HARIBO Sharing Tub is identified as the fastest-growing SKU in Symbols and Independents in 2025 (Circana). With distribution currently at just 4%, it represents a prime expansion opportunity for wholesalers. Range staples like HARIBO Bone Shakers and HARIBO Sour Bats continue to deliver high sales rates across the seasonal period (Circana).

“A critical trend for 2026 is the growing demand for ‘themed’ products,” says Duncan Tyrrell, Head of Category at HARIBO. “This shift represents a significant opportunity for wholesalers to drive incremental growth by creating a distinct seasonal ‘event’ in-store, rather than relying solely on everyday core ranges.”

Wholesalers are advised to capture early momentum in September, which accounts for 18% of total category value sales (IRI Circana).

With Halloween falling on a Saturday, nearly 25% of total value sales are projected to occur in the final week (IRI Circana).

Wholesalers should maintain strong stock availability through the final trading push, balance the fixture between core staples and seasonal NPD, and utilise high-visibility secondary displays.

“The Halloween season is no longer just a single night; it is an extended event,” notes Tyrrell. “As Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, we also anticipate an intense last-minute rush. Maintaining stock availability during this final window is a non-negotiable requirement for success.”

Halloween delivered record-breaking value sales in 2025, reaching £777m across total confectionery in the four-week lead-up (+5.2% YoY). While unit volume dropped 3.2% due to inflationary pressures, sweets alone generated £207m (+1.5% YoY), underscoring the category’s resilience as Halloween expands into a broader family and social event.

Shoppers seek accessible, value-focused price points (£1 RRP) alongside interactive novelty features, including sour profiles, tongue-painting effects, vegan recipes, and collectability.

Core bestsellers include established seasonal favourites Bonds Fizzy Fangs (sour vegan jelly sweets) and Monster Mash return with refreshed 2026 designs. PEZ remains a seasonal powerhouse, generating £7.2m in UK retail sales via its collectible Halloween dispensers.

New £1 RRP options under the Candy Realms brand include Jelly Pumpkins (170g), chocolate Candy Skulls (110g), Mallow Pops (40g), and jelly-filled Twisted Mallows with tongue-painting centres.

“Halloween is becoming a broader family and social occasion, covering trick-or-treating, parties, sharing and affordable nights at home,” explains Nat Panter, Brand Manager at World of Sweets. “Consumers may be managing their overall spending carefully, but they are still willing to purchase accessible treats at clear price points.”

Wholesalers are advised to build dedicated, depot-wide Halloween destinations starting in early September to capture early pre-sell and novelty demand.

“Wholesalers should offer clear entry price points alongside novelty products that allow retailers to trade shoppers up,” Panter recommends. “Create a dedicated Halloween destination rather than spreading products throughout the depot and position novelty products where retailers can immediately see their impulse potential.”

Hames Chocolates, the Lincolnshire-based chocolate manufacturer, is expanding its seasonal confectionery portfolio with the launch of its new Solid Milk Chocolate Assorted Halloween Shapes.

Available in a 100g recyclable stand-up pouch, the new Halloween mixed pouch features assorted solid milk chocolate pumpkins, bats and skulls, designed to deliver strong on-shelf standout and drive seasonal impulse sales.

Launching for Halloween 2026, the product is supplied in an outer of nine, with a wholesale price of £2.40 per pouch and an RRP of £3.50 per pouch. The range has been developed to support retailers looking to build engaging Halloween fixtures with products that offer fun, quality and accessible seasonal appeal.

With Halloween falling on a weekend in 2026, Hames Chocolates sees a strong opportunity for confectionery formats that support multiple shopper missions, from trick-or-treating and family sharing to party bowls, gifting and seasonal nights in.

Bold Halloween packaging and recognisable seasonal shapes ensure strong impact in seasonal bays, gifting displays, till points and secondary sitings, while the 100g pouch format offers retailers a flexible line that can work across both planned and impulse purchase occasions.

Carol Oldbury, CEO at Hames Chocolates, said: “Halloween has become an increasingly important retail moment, with shoppers looking for products that deliver fun, theatre and value, as well as strong quality cues. “Our new Solid Milk Chocolate Assorted Halloween Shapes have been developed to help retailers maximise the seasonal opportunity with a product that is easy to merchandise, visually engaging and suited to a range of Halloween occasions. Made using Rainforest Alliance mass balance cocoa and packed in a 100% recyclable pouch, the product also supports growing demand for seasonal confectionery with more considered sourcing and packaging credentials.

The new Solid Milk Chocolate Assorted Halloween Shapes will be available for Halloween 2026.

Beer and cider grocery sales reached £373m in the lead-up to and across the 2025 Halloween period (Nielsen IQ), with grocery generating £275m and impulse sales driving £97m. Week-of-Halloween sales jumped 6.6% week-on-week, confirming it as the autumn season’s biggest value-sales trading week.

Low-ABV and 0.0% options remain essential year-round. Staples like Birra Moretti Zero and Heineken® 0.0 cater to shoppers seeking balance.

Strongbow Dark Fruit overperforms sharply during Halloween, with its 10x440ml pack generating £1.7m in sales value (Nielsen).

Cruzcampo® Sevilla Orange (3.3% ABV) is a zesty, flavoured lager launched in March 2026 to capitalise on Cruzcampo’s 2.7% market share and the segment’s +12.4% YoY growth (CGA & NIQ).

New Inch’s Reserve (7.4% ABV): A fuller-bodied, premium apple cider crafted from local Herefordshire apples to recruit younger shoppers.

“In 2025, beer and cider sales in the week of Halloween were 6.6% higher than the previous week, cementing Halloween as the biggest trading week during the autumn season in value sales, demonstrating how key a trading period this is for retailers,” says Sarah Duncan, Category & Commercial Strategy Director at HEINEKEN UK.

“A standout brand within the HEINEKEN UK portfolio during the lead up to Halloween is Strongbow Dark Fruit, which performs way above usual sales at this time,” notes Duncan. “Last September, we launched the ‘Spine-chilling Refreshment’ campaign and we will be looking to build on the success of this campaign in 2026.”

To maximise peak sales, HEINEKEN UK advises retailers to leverage themed front-of-store POS to highlight promotions, drive basket spend and utilise category guidance on their Star Retailer platform.

As autumn approaches, Halloween and Bonfire Night offer a major revenue opportunity for retailers, with consumers seeking out Crisps, Snacks, and Nuts (CSN) for movie nights and seasonal get-togethers.

Sharing is the largest segment within the CSN category, valued at £2.1bn and continuing to grow (NielsenIQ). To maximise sales across these key occasions, KP Snacks recommends stocking a wide range of formats and brands.

Valued at £102m, KP Nuts is nearly five times larger than its nearest branded competitor (NielsenIQ). Rich in protein and fibre, it is HFSS-exempt and offers higher-value purchases that elevate basket spend.

Perfect for seasonal gatherings, the UK’s leading ridged crisp brand McCoy’s features McCoy’s Hot & Spicy to add heat to autumn celebrations. McCoy’s has also expanded into the nuts segment with McCoy’s Coated Peanuts in Flame Grilled Steak and Salt & Malt Vinegar (£1.35 PMP).

Holding a 29% market share (NielsenIQ) and nearly double the size of its closest branded competitor, Butterkist popcorn remains a staple for “Big Night In” film sessions.

popchips leads the “Better for You” bagged sharing segment, offering under 100 calories per serving.

Tyrrells hand-cooked crisps cater to shoppers looking for an elevated hosting experience.

“As Autumn approaches, Halloween and Bonfire Night present a key opportunity for retailers to drive sales and foot traffic,” says Stuart Graham, Head of Convenience and Impulse at KP Snacks. “In the lead-up to both events, consumers seek out their favourite snacks for movie nights at home and get-togethers with family and friends, making Crisps, Snacks and Nuts (CSN) a critical category to capitalise on.

“To capitalise on Bonfire Night and Halloween and the strength of the Sharing segment, retailers should stock a range of Sharing CSN products,” notes Graham. “At KP Snacks, we are catering to the growth of sharing occasions with a diverse portfolio of tasty snacks to generate demand and drive sales.”

With convenience shoppers buying 3.2% fewer items per trip than two years ago (Kantar Worldpanel), tapping into impulse-driven seasonal missions like the “Big Night In” is essential. Evening hours (5pm–9pm) account for 32% of snack sales (Kantar Worldpanel), presenting a prime opportunity for wholesalers to target Halloween socialising.

Larger formats of core brands, such as Doritos, Sensations (non-HFSS), and the newly launched Cheetos Original Cheese (125g), help retailers capture at-home sharing demand, particularly among Gen Z consumers.

Flavour is the #1 factor influencing purchase decisions, driving choice on 50% of occasions (Kantar Worldpanel). Core “beacon” brands like Walkers, Quavers, Wotsits, and Monster Munch help draw shoppers in. PepsiCo introduced Doritos Flamin’ Hot Nacho Cheese (163g sharing bag) to balance rising consumer demand for spice (Numerator) with an approachable, crowd-pleasing heat level.

Sharing bags dominate new price-marked pack (PMP) sales, accounting for 73% of new PMP product sales (NIQ).

“Savoury snacks remain a strong favourite among shoppers… It is an impulse-driven category, which puts symbol group and independent retailers in a prime position to win,” notes Ed Merrett, Wholesale Controller at PepsiCo. “That means it’s more important than ever to tap into seasonal shopper missions that boost impulse sales and basket spend.”

To maximise Halloween sales, PepsiCo advises wholesalers to prioritise best-selling brands in sharing PMP formats, implement clear in-depot point-of-sale signposting, and set up dedicated displays in the weeks leading up to the holiday.

“When people come together to connect and socialise during occasions such as Halloween, they’re often looking for larger pack sizes of their favourite snacks to share,” says Merrett. “These brands offer wholesalers the chance to increase seasonal savoury snack sales from independent retailers.”

Halloween and Bonfire Night are increasingly critical “Big Night In” occasions, driven by consumers seeking affordable, sociable celebrations at home. Ongoing cost-of-living pressures have accelerated the popularity of “fakeaways”—where shoppers recreate takeaway-style meals such as burgers and loaded hot dogs rather than eating out.

Seasonal gatherings drive demand across multiple categories beyond confectionery, including bakery, proteins, sauces, and drinks. Core foundation products like Baker Street Burger Buns and Hot Dog Rolls act as versatile bases for feeding families and groups.

Baker Street’s longer shelf-life proposition allows wholesalers to build stock early without risking waste, ensuring continuous availability for both early planners and last-minute shoppers.

“Halloween and Bonfire Night are increasingly important Big Night In occasions, with consumers looking for affordable and sociable ways to celebrate at home,” says Louise Reynard, Customer Development Director, UK at St Pierre Groupe, commenting on behalf of Baker Street. “Ongoing pressure on household budgets means many shoppers are choosing to recreate restaurant and takeaway-style meals themselves, rather than eating out or ordering in.”

Wholesalers should begin building seasonal displays roughly a month before October 31st to allow independent retailers ample time to stock up. Maintaining 100% availability on core bakery items is vital, as an out-of-stock on burger buns or hot dog rolls directly leads to lost sales across complementary categories.

“Wholesalers should encourage retail customers to approach Halloween and Bonfire Night as complete shopper occasions rather than focusing only on traditional seasonal categories such as confectionery,” Reynard advises. “Baker Street Burger Buns and Hot Dog Rolls can be displayed or promoted alongside burgers, sausages, plant-based alternatives, cheese, sauces, snacks and soft drinks to create a clear Big Night In solution.”

Halloween falling on a Saturday in 2026 presents a extended weekend celebration opportunity, closely followed by Bonfire Night. Driven by the “affordable indulgence” trend, budget-conscious consumers are opting for at-home gatherings without compromising on quality. Treat-led midweek dinners are up 10% year-on-year (Worldpanel Usage), proving shoppers are willing to pay slightly more to elevate everyday meals into restaurant-inspired experiences.

St Pierre is the UK’s number one savoury brioche brand (Circana).

Pre-sliced St Pierre Brioche Buns and Brioche Hot Dog Rolls serve as versatile bases for burgers and loaded hot dogs, driving cross-category link sales with chilled meats, plant-based proteins, cheese, and condiments.

The range’s extended shelf life and broad meal relevance minimise waste risks for both retailers and shoppers, addressing consumer desire for products that extend beyond a single event.

“Consumers are increasingly choosing to celebrate at home, where they can enjoy a sociable occasion at a more accessible cost than eating or drinking out,” says Louise Reynard, Customer Development Director, UK at St Pierre Groupe, commenting on behalf of St Pierre. “However, value-conscious shoppers are not necessarily prepared to compromise on quality. They still want Halloween and Bonfire Night food to feel indulgent, memorable and different from an everyday meal.”

Wholesalers are advised to start planning early and view Halloween and Bonfire Night as a continuous seasonal window rather than isolated sales peaks.

“Wholesalers should avoid focusing exclusively on the most obvious Halloween categories,” Reynard recommends. “Confectionery, snacks and drinks are important, but a complete offer should also incorporate bakery and other meal components that help retailers cater for parties, family gatherings and post-event meals.”

“Ranges should balance value, quality and versatility. A ‘good, better, best’ structure gives independent retailers options for different shoppers while creating a clear pathway to premiumisation,” adds Reynard.
