Nottingham social enterprise Half the Story has launched a new product range this month in order to create even more job opportunities for people facing homelessness and other major barriers to work.

Since launching in 2022, Half the Story has been making waves — not just for their delicious shortbread but also for their social impact. They’ve employed over 30 bakers who have faced various barriers to employment. Every employee earns a real Living Wage and has access to unique in-work support and mentoring.

Their biscuits can now be found on board Avanti West Coast and EMR trains, as well as in offices, canteens, hotels and cafes around the UK. Their recent growth means even more life-changing job roles created in their bakery.

Their pioneering blend of sustainable business and supportive employment has been celebrated with multiple awards, from Social Enterprise UK and Crisis to the prestigious Centre for Social Justice Award in 2025. The bakery was also recognised with a visit from Cabinet ministers earlier this year to see their life-changing work in action.

The handy new twin packs of biscuits are handmade in their bakery and are perfect for transport, hotels, hospitality and conferencing. There is also a completely plastic-free option, with fully compostable and recyclable packaging.

Half the Story MD and co-founder Matt Parfitt said, “This new product offer shows that we can make a shortbread to rival the big name alternatives, and deliver on a national scale. And ours is made by hand, is totally delicious and makes a real difference in the lives of those who made it.”

83% of Half the Story’s current employees have faced significant barriers to work, and 96% of employees agree that working for Half the Story has a positive impact on their life. One baker recently said, “without Half the Story I would be in a homeless situation… this job gives a new start to my family.”
