Dominic Hall, Joint Managing Director of James Hall & Co Ltd has been elected President of SPAR International, the world’s largest voluntary retail food network.

The announcement was made at the 67th International SPAR Congress, which took place in Malta on 21 and 22 May 2024.

It is the inaugural election of a SPAR UK representative to this role and Dominic brings a wealth of experience to this prestigious position. Having worked in the James Hall & Co Ltd family business since 1999, Dominic represents the fifth generation of the Hall family. He has been a Board member of the SPAR UK Food Distributors Ltd since 2007, held the position of Chair of the National Guild of SPAR UK since 2011, and became a member of the Supervisory Board of SPAR International in 2017.

As one of SPAR UK’s regional distribution companies, James Hall & Co. Ltd is a fifth-generation family business which serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England from its base at Bowland View in Preston, Lancashire.

Speaking about his election as the eighth President in the history of SPAR International, Dominic Hall said: “I am honoured and excited to take on the role as President of SPAR International. SPAR is an internationally renowned organisation, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with the Board and SPAR country organisations to collectively grow and develop the SPAR brand.

“SPAR has a proud history of grocery retailing and as we move forward, I am committed to building on this legacy and drive growth. Together, we will continue to meet the evolving needs of our shoppers and make a positive impact on local communities around the world. I take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members for their trust and this appointment.”

SPAR UK comprises more than 2,400 SPAR stores, with combined retail sales exceeding £3.6 billion. SPAR entered the UK market in 1957, when a group of wholesalers adopted the brand. Independent retailers were quick to sign up to SPAR, and several of the early retail family members are still thriving with SPAR today.

There are now over 13,940 SPAR stores operating under one of the SPAR formats in 49 countries around the world, employing over 472,000 people. These stores meet the needs of over 14.7 million shoppers every day.
