Highland Wholefoods – the Inverness workers’ co-operative known for championing ethical, organic and sustainable products across the North of Scotland – is marking a significant moment as founding member Kevin McCubbin announces his retirement at the end of November.

Established in 1989, the co-operative supplies natural and organic food and drink, Fairtrade staples, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and environmentally friendly household products from its base on Harbour Road in Inverness and from Jackson’s in Portree, serving the Highlands, Islands and Moray coast to both trade customers and the public.

Reflecting on the early days and his impending retirement, Kevin says:

“We’ve really come a long way since the original group of five people. It’s been incredibly rewarding to help build Highland Wholefoods from those early days into the thriving co-operative it is today. I am so glad that I was able to work here. It’s never been boring and has, for the most part, been highly enjoyable. Like all workplaces, we’ve had our ups and downs, but if I had my time again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and what the team are still working to achieve. I can’t say I’ll miss the early morning starts though!”

Most staff have worked alongside Kevin for many years, and his departure marks a big change for the team. Colleagues describe a mix of pride, excitement and mild panic, as Kevin has long been the one who “knows everything.” His calm, cheery presence has always brought a relaxed, steadying vibe to the workplace, and he will leave a huge hole that will be felt by everyone. There may even be a few tears!

Highland Wholefoods now has 11 members of staff and continues its commitment to championing community values, sustainability and ethical practice, carrying forward the legacy Kevin helped build, and ensuring that ethical shopping in the Highlands remains as lively and friendly as ever.
