Tim Adams, Sales and Marketing Director at Bidfood, says technology and automation enhance operational efficiencies.

What do you think will be the biggest emerging trends in wholesaling in 2026?
Technology and automation have changed the game in how wholesale operates, emerging as a crucial element in enhancing the customer experience and operational efficiencies. Wholesalers will also increasingly rely on AI and advanced technology to improve efficiency, transforming the industry to make it smarter, faster, and more sustainable.
As we look ahead to 2026, sustainability remains a central focus for wholesale businesses, evolving from a compliance-driven necessity to a strategic lever for growth and resilience. This shift is propelled by advancements in technology, regulatory developments, and a deeper integration of sustainability into core business operations.
The rise of weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro is already reshaping the out-of-home market by shifting consumer habits towards healthier, lower-calorie options. With the number of weight-loss injection users only set to increase, operators will need to adapt their offerings accordingly, with items such as sharing platters, small plates, and wholefood dishes, all of which they will look to wholesalers to support them with.
What will be the key categories to watch out for?
One of the five key trends we have identified for 2026 is “Whole Lotta Goodness”. This trend focuses on continued consumer interest in the impact of nutrition on health and wellbeing, and the desire for more wholefoods to be included on menus and incorporated into diets.
How can wholesalers best prepare for 2026?
Wholesalers should focus on resilience, digitalisation, and aligning closely with fast-changing consumer and regulatory trends. Rising costs, sustainability obligations, and stricter health and packaging regulations will continue to pressure margins, so efficiency and compliance must be priorities.
Consumer demand is shifting towards healthier, functional, and ethically sourced products, alongside a mix of value-for-money staples and affordable indulgences. At the same time, success will depend on innovation and customer focus. Investing in data-driven forecasting, automation, and e-commerce platforms will improve responsiveness and provide a great customer experience.
Do you think online shopping will increase over the next year?
Digital and e-commerce channels will be central to the evolution of food and drink wholesaling, with B2B marketplaces playing a transformative role. Wholesalers will increasingly use AI-driven platforms to offer real-time stock visibility, personalised pricing, and automated replenishment directly to buyers.
Will wholesalers become more reliant on AI and robotics?
AI is, and will continue to be, a major force in wholesale, and those who do not embrace it now run the risk of being left behind. Through advanced forecasting, smarter inventory management, and automation of routine tasks such as order processing and invoicing, AI is transforming how wholesalers operate. In time, warehouses will evolve into smart facilities using AI and robotics for real-time tracking and faster fulfilment.
Will wholesalers adopt more sustainable practices such as eco-friendly packaging, reducing transport emissions, and implementing recycling programmes?
Wholesalers are adopting eco-friendly packaging, replacing single-use plastics with recyclable or compostable alternatives, and encouraging suppliers to use lighter or reusable materials to cut waste. Wholesalers are taking steps to reduce transport emissions and improve waste management across their operations. Electric and hybrid delivery vehicles, route optimisation technologies, and localised distribution centres are being used to cut fuel consumption and carbon output.
Will consumers stay in more and will there consequently be more products aimed at in-home consumption?
The desire to eat out remains strong amongst consumers, but with busy lives and often tight purse strings, there has been a significant increase in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) sector. The sector’s growth is underpinned by technology – apps, delivery platforms, and loyalty programmes – making it easier than ever for consumers to access fast, convenient food.
Will healthy eating and wellness be even bigger trends in 2026?
Healthy eating and wellness will continue to grow in 2026. Bidfood’s 2026 Food & Drink Trends research found that 47% of consumers have tried reducing their ultra-processed food consumption when eating out, clearly indicating a desire to incorporate more wholefoods onto menus and into diets.
When it comes to incorporating wholefoods onto menus and into dishes, whether through lean meat, oily fish, or plant-based protein, the centre of the plate is a natural place to start. We know that many consumers want to make healthier choices but often need guidance, which presents significant opportunities for the out-of-home sector.
