Brand takes top honour in ‘Cornish Pasty Company’ category as it celebrates 20 years in business
The Phat Pasty Co has won the ‘Cornish Pasty Company’ category at the inaugural Global Pasty Championships, with its Traditional Cornish Pasty taking the top honour.
Held at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall on Saturday 28 February – the weekend before St Piran’s Day – the championships saw Matt Wells, Sales Director at Phat Pasty, collect the prestigious award on behalf of the team.
Phat’s Traditional Cornish Pasty – made with 100% British Red Tractor beef and handmade in Cornwall – reflects the company’s long-standing commitment to quality, provenance and craft.
The accolade marks another milestone in what has been an exceptional 12 months for the business, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Founded in 2006 by husband and wife team Paul and Laura Clark – affectionately known as the ‘Phat Controllers’ – the company began life around their kitchen table and has grown into one of the UK’s leading foodservice pasty suppliers.
A global journey for a Cornish classic
The triumph at the Global Pasty Championships follows a string of recent achievements for the brand. In 2025, Phat Pasty won the ‘Best Pasty’ category at the British Pie Awards for its Keralan Cauliflower, Chickpea and Onion Bhaji Pasty – a bold plant-based creation that impressed judges with its flavour and innovation.
As a result of that win, Phat Pasty was invited to showcase its famous hand-crimped creations in Japan. Category sponsor Hankyu, which operates Japan’s largest department store in Osaka, invited the team to take part in its prestigious annual British Fair – an event attracting around 250,000 visitors eager to experience the very best of British food.
In total, more than 10,000 pasties were exported from the UK for the event, with a further 5,000 freshly made on-site throughout the five-day show – evidence of the Cornish pasty’s international appeal.
During the event, the team delivered live demonstrations of traditional pasty-making and hand-crimping techniques, while showcasing two of their plant-based pasties: the award-winning Keralan Cauliflower, Chickpea & Onion Bhaji Pasty and the Peppered Steak-less Pasty, which previously won the Savoury Pasty category at the 2022 World Pasty Championships.
Setting the standard for the sector
It has also been a landmark period for the brand in terms of sustainability and responsible business. In November 2024, Phat Pasty became the first Cornish pasty company to achieve B Corp certification, recognising its commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
More recently, in February 2025, the company became the first pasty producer to have products accredited with the Vegetarian Society’s Plant-Based Trademark, showcasing its commitment to innovation and inclusivity within the category. In September 2025, Phat’s full range of pasties, sausage rolls and savouries became Red Tractor licensed, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to British quality and sustainability.
The company’s track record at the World Pasty Championships is equally impressive, having won in 2020/2021 with its Cornish Pasty, and again in 2022 when its Peppered Steak-less Pasty became the first plant-based pasty to take home an award.
Paul Clark, Phat Controller at Phat Pasty, said: “To be named the winner in the inaugural Global Pasty Championships is a huge honour for the whole team. We started this business 20 years ago around our kitchen table with a simple belief – that if you focus on provenance, quality ingredients and doing things properly, the rest will follow.
“From day one, we’ve not wavered from our commitment to use the highest quality, British ingredients as the standard for all of our Phat products. That commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship is what sets our pasties apart in terms of both quality and taste.
“To see our pasties not only recognised here at home but celebrated internationally – from national awards to showcasing in Japan – is an incredibly proud moment. It proves that the Cornish pasty really does have global appeal.”
As Phat Pasty enters its third decade, the Global Pasty Championships victory recognises a brand that has combined heritage, innovation and responsible growth – taking a Cornish classic from a kitchen table in 2006 to the global stage in 2026.
The Phat Pasty Company supplies hand-made, authentic pasties, sausage rolls and savouries to foodservice operators across the UK, from cafes and restaurants to schools, theme parks, and large catering venues. The products are distributed through some of the country’s largest foodservice wholesalers.
