Welsh foodservice wholesaler Castell Howell Foods has announced the completion of its latest expansion plan which will further strengthen its capacity to service schools, hospitals and independent businesses along the M4 corridor.

The opening of the 14,000 sq. ft. depot in Merthyr Tydfil marks the end of a significant warehouse refurbishment project that has been 12 months in development.

Matt Lewis, Managing Director, Castell Howell Foods said: “Our business plan has always encouraged steady, strategic growth and this latest development highlights our continuous investment in the areas that we service, by providing local employment and the ability to support our customers to even higher levels than ever before.

“The Merthyr depot is very important strategically as it offers us a solid base between our headquarters in Cross Hands and depot in Avonmouth. It will bolster our warehouse and delivery capabilities which customers will benefit from greatly.”

Luke Harris, Group Maintenance Manager, led the project: “The Merthyr Cold Store project has been our operational focus for the past 12 months, with our team working alongside local contractors in to bring our ambitious vision to fruition. Completion was delivered in good time, ready to support our projected growth for 2026. We’re due to start a really exciting project this spring, so watch this space…”

With 3,000 pallet capacity, five dock levellers, new refrigeration systems and racking in addition to 14 offices and a service yard, the new depot will be managed by Gavin Harry. The launch of the new depot follows the completion of a two-acre vehicle maintenance building and truck parking facility at Castell Howell’s Cross Hands depot in September, which created a state-of-the-art four-lane workshop and an additional 40 truck parking spaces. This investment has brought employment and training opportunities for drivers and tradespeople such as mechanics, electricians and fabricators.
