JW FILSHILL is investing in its logistics and warehouse operation ahead of its relocation to a 120,400sqft purpose-built distribution centre at Westway Park near Glasgow Airport in the coming weeks.

The wholesaler has appointed Barry Duncan as senior operations manager in charge of logistics and warehousing, recruiting him from medical device company Terumo Aortic in Renfrewshire where he spent three-and-a-half years, latterly as manufacturing services manager.

Duncan also spent two years with Amazon as a manager working across two fulfilment centres and previously served more than 16 years in the RAF in various engineering roles.

Keith Geddes, Filshill’s chief financial and operating officer, commented: “Managing our logistics operation is particularly challenging given the pressures that all in the logistics industry are dealing with at the moment so we are particularly pleased to have someone with Barry’s experience and skill set joining the Filshill ‘family’ at this time.

“In particular, Barry’s continuous improvement focus will help us drive efficiencies from our upcoming move to the Westway site and help with our push towards a data-driven culture across the business while at the same time continuing to deliver best-in-class customer service.”

Citing Filshill’s family values and the imminent move to Westway Park as just two of the reasons for accepting his new role, Duncan said: “Filshill has a reputation for really looking after its employees and placing huge emphasis on family values and the health and wellbeing of staff – that really attracted me to the company.

“I was also looking for a new challenge in a faster-paced environment close to my home in Port Glasgow so being part of the team leading the move to Westway ticks both of those boxes. I can’t think of a more exciting time to have joined such a dynamic business.”

Filshill, a fifth-generation business and one of Scotland’s oldest independent food and drink wholesalers, saw turnover soar to £191 million – up 23% from £155 million – in the year ending January 31, 2021.
