Netflix Is It Cake? star, Andrew Fuller, joined The Frostery’s Suzanne Thorp and Renshaw’s own experts in a celebration of young industry talent.

Renshaw, the British Bakels-owned baking brand, brought together some of the most recognisable names in baking to mentor 16 of the UK’s most promising young bakers at this year’s Renshaw Cup. The event took place for a second year running, following a hugely successful revival in 2025, after a 21-year hiatus.

This year’s Renshaw Cup took place across three days between 30 June and 2 July, at British Bakels’ Liverpool site, the home of the specialist sugarcraft brand, Renshaw, as well as Liverpool City College.

Leading the mentor line-up was Andrew Fuller, the hyper-realism cake artist and star of Netflix’s hit bakery competition Is It Cake?, who flew in from the US as a Renshaw brand ambassador. He was joined by Suzanne Thorp, founder of wedding cake studio The Frostery, and Renshaw applications specialist Francezka Bell, across three days of masterclasses, a factory tour, and hands-on creation.

During expert-led masterclasses and a full day of practical work, students created two showpieces using the wider Bakels portfolio and the extensive Renshaw range, including its newly launched Big Bakes cake mixes and a new-to-market product trialled ahead of release later this year.

Each participant was personally nominated by their college tutors for their exceptional skill, creativity, and attitude. The group represents some of the UK’s best emerging baking talent, having travelled from across the country, from Glasgow to Essex.

Commenting on the event, James Cawthorne, Managing Director at British Bakels, said: “Giving young bakers the opportunity and resources to bake alongside the very best at the Renshaw Cup is something we’re immensely proud of. By backing young bakers, we’re investing in the future of the industry and reinforcing our belief that baking and sugarcraft are skills well worth protecting.”

First launched in 1952 by John Renshaw, the Renshaw Cup has a legacy of launching careers, with past participants including Steve Fulford, now British Bakels’ Lead Technical Manager, and this year’s ambassador, Suzanne Thorpe. This year’s event was also a tribute to the late John Renshaw, whose vision in founding the competition continues to shape the careers of young bakers more than seventy years on.
