During the back-to-school season, wholesalers play a critical role in helping retailers solve everyday family needs by focusing on convenience, value, and reassurance. Key focus areas include lunchbox items, cheese snacks, healthier biscuits, multipacks, and food-to-go options.

Parents increasingly seek mindful lunchbox choices without sacrificing flavour. According to Kantar data, on-the-go shopper missions within healthier biscuits grew by 6% year-on-year, reflecting demand for convenient, balanced snacks. Within this segment, belVita holds a £219m value (per NielsenIQ), with NPD like non-HFSS belVita Honey and Chocolate Chip Minis leveraging chocolate as the number-one healthier biscuit flavour (per BelVita in GB Groc Mults).

“Parents are looking for familiar brands in formats that fit busy routines, lunchboxes, and snacking on the move,” notes Susan Nash, Trade Communications Manager at Mondelez International.

Cheese snacks remain a cornerstone for school lunches. Dairylea stands as the UK’s No. 2 cheese brand and the No. 1 snacking kit brand with a 67.6% market share (Nielsen). Value sales have risen year-on-year by 3% for Dairylea Dunkers and 7% for Dairylea Lunchers (Nielsen). Innovations like non-HFSS Dairylea Snackers with Strawberry Fruit Bites offer additional balanced options.

“Wholesalers that offer a balanced range across packed lunches, travel snacks, and quick options will be best placed to support retailers,” explains Nash.

To capitalise on demand, wholesalers must champion availability and clear visibility. Data from the Mondelez BRCR survey reveals that 72% of stores report NPD drives incremental sales, while 68.6% see sales increases when new products are merchandised beside core lines.

“New products should not sit separately or be treated as an afterthought — merchandising them alongside best-known lines helps retailers feel confident in their range,” emphasises Susan Nash.

During the back-to-school period, wholesalers face growing demand for convenient, child-friendly snacks that fit evolving routines, such as the rising trend of sectioned “bento box” lunches. Categories that offer vegan and nut-free solutions are especially crucial for navigating strict school allergen guidelines.

With busy schedules and fussy eaters, parents often balance healthy choices with “permissible treats” that satisfy sweet cravings without being over-indulgent. Packaged in twin-wrapped formats to control portions and preserve freshness, options like the Biscoff® 16x2pk Snackpack and Biscoff® and Go offer quick convenience.

“To help ease the pressure, wholesalers should prioritise ‘school safe’ items—aka nut free and vegan products like Biscoff®—to promote fuss-free shopping during the back to school period,” notes Jo Agnew, Marketing Director at Biscoff UK.

Biscoff® is now enjoyed in 7.4 million households (Nielsen CPS data). Its reach extends significantly into digital channels, accumulating nearly 70 million posts on TikTok. Viral trends regularly drive direct consumer purchasing—for example, the recent Japanese Cheesecake trend boosted Biscoff’s market share by 2 percentage points over a 4-week period.

“Our irresistible, caramelised biscuits are perfect for popping into lunchboxes, whilst Biscoff® and Go offers convenience for busy parents,” says Jo Agnew.

In high-volume seasonal periods, stocking iconic, widely recognised brands gives retailers and parents instant confidence.

“A trusted name provides parents with a safe option as they know this is something their child already enjoys, making them more likely to eat everything in their lunchbox,” highlights Agnew.

Bagged snacks represent a critical category during the back-to-school period, functioning as both a core component of school lunchboxes and a popular post-school top-up item. Convenience tracking data highlights that bagged snacks appear in 1 in 5 convenience shopping baskets, almost double the basket frequency of confectionery.

Health-conscious parents increasingly look for lighter, “free-from” choices without compromising on taste. Brands like POM-BEAR cater directly to this need by offering options under 100 calories per pack. Currently worth £40m RSV and growing at +12.2% year-on-year, POM-BEAR is consumed by 5.7 million households annually.

“Bagged Snacks is a scaleable, priority category with strong consumer appeal and household penetration, appearing in 1 in 5 convenience shopping baskets, almost twice as many as confectionery (Lumina),” explains Stuart Graham, Head of Convenience and Impulse at KP Snacks.

To capture impulse purchases and cater to varying family budgets, price-marked packs play a pivotal role in driving shopper engagement. Classic value brands, such as Space Raiders, worth £21m (Nielsen IQ), serve as popular, accessible options for after-school snacks. Space Raiders 50p PMPs hold the position of the UK’s number one singles PMP across popular flavours like Pickled Onion, Spicy, Saucy BBQ, and Beef. “Our mission is to deliver the right products at the right price points to meet consumer needs and support sales growth for our retail partners,” adds Graham.

By stocking a balance of permissible, lighter snacks and trusted, value-oriented PMPs, wholesalers can effectively help retailers satisfy daily school-day snacking demands.

The back-to-school season serves as a major driver for both wholesalers and school caterers as they prepare for the return of structured meal occasions. Bakery remains a foundational, versatile category across breakfast, lunch, and snack occasions, helping caterers construct nutritious, budget-friendly, and filling options that appeal to children while minimising food waste.

While health and wellbeing are top considerations for families, convenience and affordability remain equally decisive factors. Kingsmill 50/50® stands out as a leading product by bridging the gap between nutrition and taste across diverse foodservice settings. To provide additional menu variety across breakfast, brunch, and lunch occasions, Kingsmill Professional recently expanded its offering through wholesalers with the launch of English Muffins.

“Parents are looking for products that strike the right balance between nutrition, taste and affordability,” notes Gabriella Fisher, Marketing at Allied Bakeries.

To support busy operators facing tight budgets, wholesalers should emphasise multi-use products that keep kitchen operations simple while providing maximum menu flexibility.

“Finding ways to maximise menu versatility while keeping operations simple can help drive efficiencies and reduce waste,” explains Fisher.

Long-term growth within the category depends on strong partnerships between suppliers and wholesalers. Beyond maintaining a core stock of trusted, high-performing lines, suppliers provide digital assets, recipe ideas, and category insights to ease customer navigation and drive sales.

“To maximise category growth, wholesalers should focus on stocking a strong core range of trusted products that deliver consistent performance for customers,” emphasises Fisher.

The back-to-school period remains a cornerstone seasonal opportunity for foodservice wholesalers. Catering teams face the challenge of balancing nutritional standards, dietary inclusion, and budget constraints while managing operational pressures.

The expansion of free breakfast clubs, which have served over 10 million breakfasts to more than 300,000 children in England (Department for Education / Education Hub), is driving significant demand for easy-to-portion, high-volume options. Meanwhile, evolving School Food Standards (DfE) prioritise balanced, inclusive menus that cater to plant-based and allergen-free needs without complicating kitchen operations.

“As schools balance nutrition, inclusion and operational efficiency, wholesalers have an important role to play in supplying products that help caterers deliver appealing menus without adding unnecessary complexity,” explains Oli Sampson, Managing Director of Central Foods.

Education caterers achieve the best pupil participation by sticking to recognisable formats. Products like KaterVeg! Vegan Meatballs and KaterVeg! Vegetable Nuggets provide high-protein, versatile options suitable for vegan and gluten-free diets while meeting PHE salt targets. For sweet bakery, KaterBake Gluten Free Midi Sugared Donuts allow caterers to offer inclusive treats for coeliacs with built-in portion control.

“The most successful school menus are rarely the most complicated,” notes Sampson. “Pupils generally respond best to formats they already recognise, while catering teams need products that support consistency, portion control and efficient service.”

To succeed, wholesalers should focus on helping caterers solve operational challenges through frozen, waste-reducing products that offer multi-meal versatility.

“Wholesalers should focus on helping education customers solve operational challenges rather than simply supplying products,” highlights Sampson.

Shifted consumer priorities over the past 12 months have driven strong demand for healthier, functional, and sustainably packaged drinks. Families are seeking healthy hydration options that deliver on taste and wellbeing while offering strong value during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Soft drink consumption remains high, with Kantar/Mintel research showing 26% of UK adults (and 39% of 25–34-year-olds) consuming soft drinks daily. To capture young adult and teenage shoppers looking for low-calorie hydration, Radnor Hills launched Radnor Spring with added B vitamins, achieving 250,000 bottle sales in its first month and offering £1 PMPs to protect retailer margins.

“Our research showed that consumers want healthy hydration, great taste and, because we’re still very much in a cost-of-living crisis, excellent value for money,” says Chris Sanders, Sales & Marketing Director of Radnor Hills.

For school lunchboxes, compliance with government nutrition guidelines and HFSS/CQUIN standards remains essential. Radnor Fruits introduced 200ml Tetra Pak cartons in partnership with Disney (Lilo & Stitch), selling 1.2 million cartons over six months (Oct 2025–Mar 2026). Products like Radnor Fizz and the HFSS-compliant Radnor Hydrate (60% juice, 40% spring water) further cater to educational and healthcare channels.

“We’re seeing branded and licensing products like this really fuelling the growth of the category and parents are looking for products that they can trust and that their kids will enjoy,” explains Sanders.

mats. “We know that retailers are facing big challenges due to inflation, so we wanted to buck the trend and offer them great profit margins while also driving consumer trust and giving added value,” adds Sanders.

Driven by growing awareness around high-fructose, ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and HFSS regulations, fruit snacking has emerged as a key £518m category growing at +10% year-on-year (NielsenIQ). This trend spans both kids’ lunchboxes and adults planning ahead for working-week snacks.

With only 18% of UK children meeting their 5-a-day requirement (Truth Agency), naturally sweet, high-fibre dried fruit offers a convenient, zero-waste alternative to fresh fruit. BEAR’s adult fruit range has outperformed the market with value sales up +14.4% (NIQ Scantrack). During times of inflation, consumers prioritise quality and genuine nutritional benefits over low pricing alone.

“Fruit snacking is a lunchbox and back to school staple, and has been for years. But right now, the category has a real opportunity to shine, with the nation being more health conscious than ever before,” notes Stephanie Armstrong, BEAR Marketing Manager.

Shopper interest is propelled by engaging formats like BEAR Yoyos, which represent 52% of total brand sales (NielsenIQ), and collectable cards. To maximise sales during the back-to-school peak, wholesalers should encourage cross-category merchandising that pairs fruit snacks alongside bread, spreads, and lunchbox essentials.

“Lunchbox-style eating isn’t just for little ones – more adults are planning ahead too, whether they’re meal prepping for the working week, packing snacks to avoid higher-spend impulse purchases, or looking for a boost to beat the afternoon slump,” explains Armstrong.

“The opportunity for wholesalers is to make sure that your depot caters to both, stocking a strong selection of multipacks for planned purchases alongside grab-and-go formats for on-the-move snacking,” adds Armstrong.

With the ongoing rise in health-conscious dining, parents and carers are actively seeking nutritious options that carefully balance health credentials with flavour to ensure pupil appeal. Simple, recognisable, and naturally sweet fruit snacks serve as highly effective solutions for both home-packed lunches and school catering environments.

RM Curtis’s school-compliant Funtime Fruits range caters to these demands with convenient 25g snack packs of mixed Raisins & Sultanas or soft, dried Apricots, alongside multipacks of 14g mini raisin boxes (18x per bag) designed for household stocking and school distribution.

“When it comes to lunchboxes, this means balancing healthy options with flavour-led products that will also appeal to children,” notes Caroline Buggisch, Product Marketing Manager at RM Curtis. “Snacks that are simple, recognisable, and naturally sweet are particularly effective in school settings.”

Because the lunchtime landscape constantly shifts between packed lunches and hot school dinners, stocking versatile products that translate across both formats helps wholesalers protect volume. Funtime Fruits can be seamlessly added to lunchboxes, served as a side on meal trays, or offered during breaktime.

“The school lunchtime occasion is a constant ebb and flow of lunchboxes vs school meals gaining popularity,” explains Buggisch. “The good news for wholesalers is that the snack occasion often contains products which can be translated across either format.”

“Having three variations to choose from is a fantastic way to enable children’s autonomy to pick their own food and build their independence while teaching them the importance of well-balanced diets,” adds Buggisch. As the back-to-school season approaches, parents are actively seeking lunchbox options that balance nutritional reassurance with convenience. With UCL analysis showing nearly a quarter of five-year-olds in the UK are overweight or obese and Sustain research revealing 58% of parents worry their children lack essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D, portable fortified dairy formats serve as a crucial solution.

Convenient, portable formats fit seamlessly into busy family routines and travel. Innovations like Petits Filous Greek Style pouches offer ultimate flexibility, staying fresh out of the fridge for up to eight hours, while Frubes remains the UK’s No. 2 portable yogurt brand, worth £1.9m (Nielsen NIQ). Yop leads the £415m dairy drinks market as the UK’s No. 1 flavored yogurt drink, valued at £3.7m with +15% value growth (Nielsen NIQ).

“With busy schedules and ongoing pressure on household budgets, convenient yet nutritious options have never been more important,” explains Grant Yates, Sales Director at Yoplait.

To capitalise on key seasonal opportunities, wholesalers should focus on strategic fixture management and clear signposting for busy shoppers.

“Offering the right balance of portable, family-sized and value-led formats allows wholesalers to capture incremental occasions while meeting evolving shopper needs,” notes Yates.

“Create clear cues for key missions such as lunchbox and on-the-go. Grouping complementary formats together can help retailers navigate quickly and encourage incremental purchases,” adds Yates.

As families adjust to cost-of-living pressures, demand for protein-rich, versatile, and filling snacks continues to surge. The UK meat snacks category has doubled in value over the past five years to exceed £335m, with 1 in 5 households actively seeking out protein-packed options.

Peperami Lunchbox Minis remain a core driver for school lunchboxes, offering real meat protein in easy-to-portion formats. Simultaneously, single-stick formats in Price-Marked Packs (PMPs) capture high-volume impulse and meal-deal missions among busy shoppers.

“Protein-rich snacks are performing strongly because they offer a filling, convenient option that works across multiple occasions, from school lunchboxes to after-school snacking and family top-up shops,” notes Shaun Whelan, Head of Convenience at Jack Link’s.

To inject excitement into the category ahead of the back-to-school peak, Peperami partnered with Doritos to launch a limited-edition BBQ Sweet Tang range across 5-packs, Minis, and Singles. Supported by a £3.5m media campaign in 2026, the launch is designed to attract younger shoppers and broaden usage occasions.

Wholesalers and independent retailers can maximise sales by focusing on visibility and cross-category merchandising.

“Availability, visibility and simplicity are critical,” emphasises Whelan. “Brand-blocking products together at eye level can significantly improve visibility. Ultimately, ‘the unseen is unsold’ – if shoppers can see products clearly and access them easily, they are far more likely to purchase.”

Breakfast occasions in the UK have expanded by 56 million over the last year to reach 20.24 billion (Kantar), driven by shifting consumer preferences around health, enjoyment, and cultural relevance. To capture this growing market, Weetabix is focusing on smart merchandising, promotions, and engaging campaigns.

Key brand initiatives include the Weetabix All-Stars athlete story campaign—featuring its “We’ve Had Ours. Give Someone Theirs!” gifting mechanic—and an interactive Roblox activation designed to promote healthy habits among youth through play.

Lorraine Rothwell, Director of Brand Marketing at Weetabix, highlights the brand’s strategic vision: “Our focus is on creating standout moments at fixture through smart merchandising, meaningful promotions and added-value on-pack campaigns.

“The activation brings the Weetabix world to life through in-game experiences and has been designed to encourage healthy breakfast habits through play.”

In terms of product innovation, Weetabix Crispy Minis Caramelised Biscuit became the fastest-growing new variant of the past year, generating over £1 million (NielsenIQ) by delivering an indulgent, HFSS-compliant, high-fibre breakfast choice.

Addressing this balance, Rothwell notes: “There’s definitely a space within breakfast for fun yet nutrient dense cereals.”

Across core lines, Weetabix Original leads the UK market as the number one branded cereal, with value up 4.7% and volume up 3.8% (Nielsen), alongside its first rise in household penetration since 2020.

Simultaneously, the HFSS-compliant Weetabix Crispy Minis range has scaled into a £33 million brand (Nielsen).

The back-to-school period presents a major sales window for congestion and cold symptom relief products. With seasonal illnesses spreading among school-aged children, wholesalers are urged to stock trusted over-the-counter (OTC) options to support families.

To maximise early seasonal demand, health displays should be established by early August, before terms begin. Providing clear signposting and age-appropriate options—such as Olbas for Children, alongside portable formats like Breathe Easy Patches and Inhalers—helps parents manage back-to-school illness on the go.

Addressing the importance of stocking recognised brand names, Rachel Realf, Olbas Brand Manager, highlights consumer reliance on familiar products: “93% of branded OTC shoppers rely on brand names to guide their in-store choices, highlighting the importance of stocking a strong range of well-known, trusted brands to meet customer expectations and drive repeat business.”

Realf also points to the broader channel strategy for wholesalers ahead of high-demand periods: “Olbas supports wholesalers by offering a broad range of trusted OTC formats that retailers can stock ahead of key seasonal moments, including back-to-school, winter cold and flu and spring/summer hay fever.”

Olbas Oil remains the nation’s best-selling decongestant oil. The brand introduced Olbas Anti Allergy Nasal Spray, offering dual prevention and relief by creating a protective barrier against allergens. The broader Olbas portfolio is being backed by an integrated TV, PR, and digital marketing push to keep products top-of-mind year-round.
