Welsh wholesaler Castell Howell Foods has been supporting a local authority programme, packing more than 16,000 food care packs and supporting local authority catering teams to ensure children weren’t going hungry during the long summer holidays.
The family-run wholesaler has supported school holiday nutrition since 2015 with the local authority ‘Food and Fun’ initiative. This award-winning programme was instigated by Cardiff Council and is managed by the Local Government Association, and Castell Howell has delivered quality ingredients, locally grown vegetables and freshly made meals to children who would go without meals, alongside sports education and enrichment activities as well as teaching skills around nutrition.
Working in partnership with Caerphilly Council, the Caterforce member has provided more than 16,000 care packs during the summer holidays, and more than one million holiday and lockdown meals during the past two years. Castell Howell has worked in collaboration with their suppliers to develop nutritionally compliant meals, arranging the stock, packing the boxes and even loaning out the refrigerated vehicles for additional storage.
“There are thousands of children who rely on their school meals for vital nutrition and would have missed out during the summer holidays,” said Matt Lewis, director, Castell Howell Foods. “We’re proud to work with both our local authority customers and our supply chain to help support children’s wellbeing and nutritional education.
“Times have been challenging for many families in our local area, with more challenges to come, and we want to play a role in ensuring that children are given an opportunity to develop, safe in the knowledge that their dietary needs are met.”
