The Birmingham businessman, whose four superstores have become an institution in Oriental cuisine, was crowned winner of the Birmingham Post Enterprise Award.
The company set up by Mr Wing Yip over three decades ago employs more than 300 people and sees an annual turnover in excess of £90 million.
Mr Wing Yip said: “I am delighted to have been given this Enterprise Award.
“Birmingham is extremely important to me and is at the heart of our business so it is an honour to receive such recognition from the city’s leading newspaper.”
The Wing Yip story began 50 years ago when Mr Wing Yip arrived in the UK from his native Hong Kong as a penniless immigrant.
After seeing a gap in the market for good quality, authentic Oriental cuisine, he set up the first Wing Yip store in 1970 in Digbeth, Birmingham, expanding to Nechells, Birmingham, in 1992.
He now owns three further superstores in Manchester, Cricklewood and Croydon with plans in place to develop a 60,000 sq ft fifth superstore in Nottingham, a sixth in Cardiff and to double the size of its Birmingham distribution centre.
