Steve Parfett, Chairman of wholesaler, Parfetts Cash & Carry, has won the Family Business Director of the Year Award from the Institute of Directors (IoD). The awards, which are open to both members and non-members, celebrate directors at the forefront of leadership excellence across the best British businesses.
Steve was invited to enter the national event following his IoD North West award in autumn 2013. The winners were announced at a luncheon at the Lancaster London Hotel attended by some 400 directors and presided over by Michael Portillo.
Founded in 1980, Parfetts is an employee owned cash and carry wholesaler of food, drink and tobacco to retailers and caterers. Steve successfully built up the family company over 28 years; today, it has 6 sites, 541 employees and £309million turnover. In 2008, as part of a succession and sustainability plan, he oversaw the transition from family to employee ownership. He is currently a Director of the Employee Ownership Association and sits on the Federation of Wholesale Distributors Council.
Steve says that he is extremely honoured and proud to have won, “It’s great to see that the adoption of employee ownership is being increasingly recognised and encouraged as a viable alternative to traditional business models. It was a privilege to attend the awards event and to hear so many interesting and positive stories from such an array of businesses.
“I was thrilled to get an IoD North West award and to win the Family Business Director of the Year award is testimony to all the hard work of friends and colleagues at Parfetts which will ensure that the business continues to be successful.”
