Medisafe is a world leader in surgical reprocessing solutions which increase patient safety by reducing the risk of cross contamination. The company’s site in Bishop’s Stortford, which manufactures ultrasonic washers, has taken delivery of a Combi-CS pedestrian counterbalance stacker which has improved handling procedures in the relatively tight confines of the production facilities.

The model was chosen to replace a ride-on reach truck on the advice of Alex Payne from Combilift. “When I did a site survey it was obvious that the compact dimensions and features of the Combi-CS would perfectly suit Medisafe’s requirements. The location of the warehousing area within the manufacturing section meant that, due to its size, the previous truck caused interruption in operations when it was moving pallets or placing and picking them in the racking.”

Aisle widths of 2.8m that were needed to accommodate the ride-on truck have now been able to be reduced down to 2.3m, thanks to the Combi-CS’s manoeuvrability and its tight turning circle. This has created more space where employees are working alongside the Combi-CS, which in turn improves their safety and that of the operator. This is in part due to the stacker’s multi-position tiller arm – a feature common to all Combilift’s pedestrian models – which can be turned to the left or right, allowing the operator to remain at the side of the unit rather than the rear, and which provides full visibility of the load, the forks and the surroundings.

The 1,000kg capacity model was fitted with a triplex full free-lift mast to enable it to pass under a mezzanine floor with a lowered mast height of 2080mm whilst being able to lift pallets to 4.5m in the top bays of racking. Although it works mainly inside, the Combi-SC’s ability to offload deliveries from incoming HGVs outside and bring pallets directly to the storage area is beneficial for avoiding time-consuming double-handling. “This truck is easy to use, it’s stable, safe and perfect for what we do here. Training is quick and there is no need for a forklift licence,” said Production Supervisor Ben Hall.
