The History of Otterburn Mill
Queen Alexandra’s love for Otterburn tweed and rugs created the demand for the famous Otterburn Pram Rug.
The mill flourished and royalty began to hear of the famous Otterburn Tweeds. Royalty used the tweeds for their hunting, shooting and fishing clothing. Each shooting estate had its own tweed, designed to blend in with the hill colours and this was used by the gamekeepers and the shooting parties.
Although the main mill buildings date back to the mid 18th century, and it is believed that there was, in fact, a Mill on the present site way back in the 1400s, little is known of Otterburn Mill’s history prior to 1821.
Otterburn Mill closed as a manufacturing premises back in 1976 and now operates as a highly popular retail and food outlet with extensive grounds available to the public for fishing and other leisure activities.
The Brief
In 1995 the business and premises were bought by Euan Pringle, a member of the famous family of Scottish woollen manufacturers. Since that time, the site has undergone a substantial period of redevelopment to produce the facilities available today.
To continue the site’s development the owners needed a trusted company with a history of retail shop fitting to the very highest quality and standards of work. With a 25 year history and testimonials to back up their work, Replan were an obvious choice.
The Design
A challenging part of the redevelopment and a reason why the owners chose Replan was to create a clothing retail area in keeping with the building, but also featuring a flexible and movable merchandising system. Euan Pringle contacted the company which had fitted out a competitor’s store and was suitably impressed.
Replan controlled the design aspect of the project and clearly explained the reasoning behind the proposal before starting on site.
The Result
Replan’s team of experienced fitters carried out the work efficiently and quickly. On site problems were quickly overcome and the build programme ran to plan.
