New portion-controlled, whole muscle, cooked chicken breast developed in response to changing requirements for School Food Standards

Meal solutions specialist Roberts of Port Dinorwic has launched a new school catering offer, designed to help local authorities, education caterers and their distribution partners deliver high-quality, consistent meals while simplifying preparation in busy school kitchens.

50g of Certainty on Every Plate:

At the heart of the new offer is a cooked whole chicken breast product that can be reheated and served as a guaranteed 50g portion, meeting the primary school portion guidance – to help caterers manage portion consistency, recipe costing, kitchen efficiency and adhere to nutritional requirements.

The launch comes as school caterers respond to changing requirements around the frequency and type of meat products served on school menus.

As a whole piece of chicken breast rather than a sliced or reformed product, it has been developed with the requirements of school catering in mind. Made with no added nitrates or preservatives, low salt and no added sugar, and allergen free, the product has strong clean-label credentials.  Delivered frozen, the chicken is ready to reheat as needed to ensure minimal waste.

The new 50g chicken portion is launching in October, alongside an 80g portion for secondary schools, with Roberts now looking to work with foodservice distributors supplying local authority and education catering contracts, as well as directly with school catering providers.

Miriam Williams, Commercial Director at Roberts of Port Dinorwic, said:

“Changes to school food requirements have implications not only for menu planning, but also for procurement, cost, kitchen resource and consistency. We saw a need for a solution and developed a product specifically around those operational requirements.

“The result is deliberately straightforward and simple: a fully cooked, frozen whole-muscle chicken breast in a consistent minimum 50g portion after reheating to 82c. It gives caterers greater predictability over portions and plate costs, while reducing preparation requirements at kitchen level.”

The launch forms part of Roberts of Port Dinorwic’s strategy to bring its food development and large-scale manufacturing capabilities to new markets. With more than 100 years of heritage, the North Wales business works with foodservice

customers to develop scalable solutions addressing challenges including portion control, waste, operational efficiency and cost.

Siobhan Barnes, Commercial Manager at Roberts of Port Dinorwic added:

“Education is an exciting market for Roberts because good product development can make a tangible difference. We understand the pressure public sector caterers are under to deliver nutritious, appealing food within tight budgets and operational constraints.  We are dedicated to our part in creating a food ecosystem for people and planet to thrive through joyful eating.

“We’re keen to work with distributors, local authorities and catering teams to explore where our development and manufacturing expertise can help solve those challenges.”
