Bestway Wholesale paid tribute to the independent retail sector recently by hosting its annual Retail Development Awards as Bestway and Batleys staff united with the key suppliers to recognise the UK’s best independent stores.


Held at the opulent Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London and hosted by Bestway Group CEO Zameer Choudrey and Bestway Wholesale managing director Younus Sheikh, the Retail Development Awards form a core part of Bestway’s mission to drive up store standards and increase profitability of its customers.

The nationwide scheme, now in its fifteenth year and supported by the biggest names in FMCG, rewards retailers from across the UK with the winning retailers sharing a prize fund of over £32,000.

Top prize and a cheque for £10,000 went to Tharmalingam Gnanachchandran of The Local Zone in Liverpool.

Speaking at the awards, Bestway’s group chief executive, Zameer Choudrey said: “Tonight is where our customers take centre stage. These are retailers who chose to develop their own stores rather than worry about the competition and who attended the Bestway Retail Development Seminars, listened, learned and put into practice, strategies for growth that helped develop their businesses. This is their reward for the efforts they have put into their business; they are the driving force, they are the ones who make a tangible contribution to the communities they serve; they run the stores that their customers rely on morning, noon and night come rain, hail or shine. As their primary supplier we are delighted that through the RDA scheme and our dedicated branch network we have contributed to their success.”

The awards are the culmination of the Retail Development Programme run by Bestway which include three two-day workshops (in Edinburgh, Leeds and Weybridge) in which retailers are given the latest insights and category advice to help them develop their stores. are challenged to go back to their stores and from the sessions. Awards are then given to those who have implemented and applied these learnings in store. Over the 15 years duration of the Retail Development programme, Bestway is proud to have helped more than 5,200 independent retailers build a more profitable business.
