Caribbean Savouries launched 3 new products which are available in the Ethnic frozen section of ASDA stores across the nation. They are Cassava based products, also known as “Bammy” and sweet ripe plantain.

Bammies are available in two formats, Sticks and Cocktails. The sweet ripe plantain is easy to prepare in the microwave, ready in minutes or a portion can be heated in the oven for 10 minutes or fried for four minutes. Ideal as a side dish, they can also be eaten for breakfast with toast along with your favourite spread.

In Jamaica “Bammy” is a popular meal enjoyed by both residents and visitors of the tropical island.  It is made from Cassava root (a vegetable in the yam family); which is very rich in starch and contains significant amounts of calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin b6 and vitamin C and is also Gluten Free. Bammies are traditionally served with escovitched fish and vegetables particularly  ackee and saltfish the national dish of Jamaica. The products are manufactured in Jamaica and the packaging carries the ISO 14001 certification mark which ensures that the products are manufactured to international standards

Plantain is a “Banana-like” vegetable which can be served with a savoury main course or with dessert. Scientific studies have also suggested that plantains may be useful in preventing or treating kidney and bladder problems. A cup of sliced plantain only contains 181 calories. Plantains contain ten times more beta carotene than bananas, as well as having a good supply of Vitamins A, C, B6, potassium, folate, iron, and magnesium. The amount of Vitamin A in the fruit depends on the colour. The yellower the flesh, the more Vitamin A it contains. A deep yellow fruit can provide as much as 1200 IU’s of Vitamin A in a 3.5 ounce serving; this is how the product is prepared the fruit yellow, ripe and sweet.
