Hampshire County Council Catering Services (HC3S) have scooped the award for the secondary schools sector in the Healthy Schools’ Caterer Competition 2011 with California Raisins.

California Raisins have been running this competition for 6 years and have witnessed the superb work that has been and continues to be, put into schools catering and healthy eating.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, said: “Hampshire County Council Catering Services serves around eight million meals to pupils per year and has seen an increase in take-up of some seven percent in primary schools and five percent in secondary schools over the last twelve months, demonstrating how Hampshire’s young people enjoy the healthy and nutritious school meals served and how HC3S has continued to develop its menus.”

HC3S provides delicious, nutritionally balanced meals for over 470 schools across the county. Throughout the year, pupils can select a main meal, a side helping of vegetables, a salad and a dessert, which combine to make up a third of the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals for a child.

A heaped tablespoon of California Raisins equals one portion of the recommended 5 portions of fruit or vegetables a day. Tim Bates from the California Raisin Administrative Committee said, “The standard of the entries was very high, HC3S fully deserve this prize for the work they have done in the past year”

The winner of the primary schools sector in the competition is Cater Link.
