Installation of new eight-colour flexo press opens up exciting opportunities for leading independent flexible packaging specialist. Underlining its on-going commitment to delivering innovative, high quality and cost effective flexible packaging products including film on the reel, laminates and bags, Mercury Packaging has recently installed a new £1.3 million eight-colour Uteco Onyx flexographic gearless print press at its state-of-the-art 33,000 sq ft facility, located in Nottingham.
In line with an ambitious future growth strategy, this significant investment has further strengthened the company’s position as one of the UK’s leading independent converters and printers of flexible packaging solutions for the mailing, magazine publishing, retail, security and fulfilment markets.
In addition, it has allowed Mercury to penetrate the previously untapped food industry with the development of BRC/IoP approved printed films, laminates and bags for the frozen and chilled foods; fresh produce; pet food; confectionery; and tea and coffee sectors.
Mike Barlow, Director, Mercury Packaging comments: “Bringing printing in-house was a natural next step following our expansion into larger premises a couple of years ago. We had enough work to justify the investment and decided to go for it. Once full, it should increase our turnover by 50 per cent.

Most importantly though, the installation reflects our continued commitment to delivering the service levels and technical excellence required by blue chip customers across all market sectors.”
The new press enables Mercury to offer a diverse range of printing capabilities up to 1250mm wide with 330mm to 750mm design repeat in up to eight colours. It allows printing and lamination to a variety of material substrates including Polyethylene (PE), Cast Polypropylene (CPP), and Biaxially Orientated Polypropylene (BOPP). Speciality inks include metallics, light fast, pearlescents, high abrasion resistance, deep freeze, write on and thermochromics.
Mercury specialises in the supply of high clarity PP films for display purposes as well as a variety of PE film specially designed to provide the strength and impact qualities required for protection. It has recently added a range of laminates to supplement its single ply films for the food packaging sector.
As well as a dedicated print room and extensive warehousing facilities, Mercury’s production plant comprises a conversion hall which operates eight advanced converting machines producing simple glue line bags; point of sale, bank note and coin bags; high security bags; and mailing and courier envelopes.
The company is also a market leader in security and track and trace features including sequential numbering, bar coding, and tamper resistant and tamper evident closure systems.
Established in 1999, Mercury employs some 50 people at its site in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and has a current turnover of £5 million.
