• A urine colour scale led by Highland Spring’s nutritionist partner – in collaboration with Pantone Color Institute – shows five key shades used to help indicate healthy hydration.
  • The handy guide will help 40% of Brits* who are unsure of how much water to drink by openly embracing our body’s natural health indicators.
  • The guide forms part of Highland Spring’s Natural 10 Challenge, inviting people to embrace the healthy habit with ‘hydration hacks’ from Harley Street nutritionist Lily Soutter.
  • The challenge marks the release of Highland Spring’s new 10 litre box – the biggest pack available from the brand – allowing people to enjoy more natural source Scottish water.

A colour scale to get people checking the shade of their pee has been created by leading natural source water brand Highland Spring, in close partnership with Pantone Color Institute’s global team of ‘colour experts’.

Based on guidance provided by Harley Street nutritionist Lily Soutter (BSc, Dip NT), who uses the NHS Nutrition and Dietetics Urine Colour chart, Highland Spring has made a digital colour palate of five key shades ranging from clear to dark yellow. The scale highlights the shades symbolic of healthy hydration.

The aim is to help people get their daily intake of fluids following a study of 2,000 adults* found 40% are confused about how much water they should be drinking.

The study also found that despite believing they should be drinking seven glasses of water a day, people typically have five – although 23% only manage one to two. 43% do not think they are getting enough, because they simply forget to drink water (63%), get distracted by their day-to-day routine (42%) and are too busy (15%).

The guide is unveiled as Highland Spring’s new 10 litre hydration pack goes on sale. The new pack is suitable for all the family as well as occasions in and out of the home, such as on long car journeys or camping trips.

Highland Spring’s Head of Marketing Carol Saunders said: “Our bodies have a built-in and natural way of helping us to know if we are drinking enough fluids. We know it can be embarrassing to talk about our pee, but it’s an important indicator to help us staying hydrated.

“So we’ve partnered with Pantone Color Institute to kick start that conversation, because for many of us, drinking enough fluids is the first step to feeling more like our natural selves in any self-care routine. Alongside this, Highland Spring’s new 10 litre hydration pack means it’s easier than ever to help people on their way to healthy hydration, in and out of the home.”

Highland Spring’s urine colour guide makes basic analysis of hydration levels easy, providing an at-a-glance guide to our pee. However, the guide is illustrative only and any concerns should be addressed by a medical expert.**

Laurie Pressman, Vice-President of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “Eating right and drinking proper amounts of water are critical contributors to taking care of our personal heath and our overall well-being.  Being able to collaborate with Highland Spring and their expert nutrition partner Lily Soutter to create a colour flow chart illustrating the relationship between urine colour and hydration levels highlights how the visual language of colour can be used as an indicator to provide quick and natural insights as to whether we are keeping ourselves healthfully hydrated.”

To mark the new product release, Highland Spring is also launching The Natural 10 Challenge. This is designed to help people achieve the daily recommended intake of H2O – which is an average of two litres*** for adults. The study also revealed benefits adults have enjoyed from keeping on top of their water consumption, which included clearer skin (25%), feeling more active (22%) and reduced cravings for snacks (18%).

Nutritionist Lily Soutter, who has training in Food and Human Nutrition, a degree accredited by The Association for Nutrition (a qualification which is recognised by the NHS), points to the NHS advice*** on the health benefits of proper hydration: “Drinking enough fluids and staying hydrated throughout the day is important for energy, concentration, mood, and even exercise performance.

She goes on to say, “Reaching our daily water target is important for maintaining normal physical and cognitive functions. More than half our body is made up of water, therefore staying hydrated can play a key role with our overall wellbeing.

“It’s brilliant to bring attention to a sometimes-taboo topic, because it really shouldn’t be. Checking our pee is so easy, it’s something everyone can do and it’s a step to looking after our wellbeing. That’s what the Natural 10 is all about.”

The Highland Spring 10 litre hydration pack is the first of its kind within the natural source water category in British retail. The pack’s cardboard outer is FSC certified, and alongside the plastic inner, is fully recyclable. This is in line with the company’s environmental initiatives, including new packaging innovations and an ongoing focus on contributing to a circular plastics economy in the UK.
