Meat specialists Smithfield Foods have added a new product to their PEK-branded canned meat portfolio in the form of a canned premium ham. The new product is to be launched as an extension to the already well-established and strong-performing PEK chopped pork range. Since its launch in the mid-1970s the PEK brand has been one of the UK’s best-loved canned meat brands and has a well established range at full distribution throughout supermarkets and independent retailers up and down the country. The brand is especially strong in the North East and Yorkshire, where according to market information experts TNS, it is the market leader.
The new PEK Premium Ham product is being launched in round cans and will be available in two sizes; 200g and 340g, making it suitable for a whole range of canned meat consumers. The range has been developed to give buyers a more affordable alternative to some more expensive chilled hams, which often have higher levels of fat than canned meats and in addition the longer shelf life and reduction in wastage is an added convenience without sacrificing product quality.
Long and much-maligned as poor quality, old fashioned and generally inferior, canned meats have recently seen something of a turnaround, with companies investing in new products and in reducing salt and fat levels. The new PEK ham is ideal in sandwiches, salads and pasta meals.

In addition to the Premium Ham range, there are a variety of other canned meat products sold under the PEK brand including Chopped Pork, Cured Chicken Breast, Cured Turkey Breast, Prime Stewed Steak in Gravy and Prime Minced Beef with Onion in Gravy.
