All Mr Muscle® trigger bottles in the UK also feature perforated sleeves to help increase recyclability as part of SC Johnson’s commitment to tackle plastic waste

SC Johnson, an industry-leading manufacturer of household cleaning and other consumer and professional products, today announced all of its Mr Muscle® trigger bottle products in the UK are now made using 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. The bottles are packaged with a new perforated sleeve, which can be easily removed by consumers, helping to increase recyclability. Typically, sleeves that cover plastic bottles contain ink and have low melting temperatures, which can pollute municipal waste recycling streams.

The new bottles are a reflection of how SC Johnson is accelerating its progress to tackle the plastic pollution crisis. Some of the ways the company is increasing the use of PCR and removing excess packaging from products includes:

  • A goal to triple the amount of post-consumer recycled plastic content in packaging across its product lines by 2025. Today 14% of SC Johnson’s plastic packaging is PCR, up from 6% in 2019.
  • The launch of a new line of Mr Muscle® Platinum Window & Glass cleaner in the UK last year featuring 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles. The plastic for the bottles is sourced from its global partnership with Plastic Bank, which helps prevent plastic waste from entering the oceans while improving the lives of those who help collect it.
  • A goal to make 100% of its plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Currently, more than 62% of SC Johnson products are designed for this, and the company is expanding concentrated refill options and refill trials with Ecover through Waitrose and Sainsbury supermarkets.

SC Johnson also works closely with several partner organisations to support circular plastic economy models and keep plastic out of landfills and the wider environment. The company is a signatory of The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme to establish a common vision for companies to help create a circular economy for plastics.
