Leading seafood processor Cumbrian Seafoods has further strengthened its already impressive environmental credentials with the launch of the new Prawn Cocktail single portion pot for Tesco. Collaboration with packaging specialist Superfos and the Tesco development team has created a delicious product with eco-friendly packaging and distribution qualities. Cumbrian had already commissioned research into the purchase, storage and consumption of the legendary snack when presented with a challenge by Tesco, at a recent supplier conference, to bring about improvements in carbon foot printing and the efficient use of energy.
The Prawn Cocktail re-launch, within Tesco’s Standard and Healthy Living ranges using high visual impact oval pots, is expected to expand its popularity still further. Research suggested that a 140g sub-£1 single portion offering would satisfy the requirements of regular consumers and attract new customers to the snack.
Chris Baird of Cumbrian commented: “The new pot is not just a direct response to taste and price considerations. Working closely with our packaging supplier Superfos, we have produced a lighter pot which saves 21 tons of raw material a year against current volumes. Furthermore, the new shape allows for the stacking of an extra 8,000 pieces per pallet, providing an initial transport cost reduction of 60 %.
