Glasgow-based wholesaler JW Filshill is strengthening its KeyStore business support team in the north of England with the appointment of Arwel Carter as regional development manager.

Mr Carter, who joins the fifth-generation family business after nearly nine years with McCurrach, the well-known field marketing agency, will report to Graham Cairns who is promoted to sales and business development manager for the north of England following the departure of Jeanette Gordon who has left the company to support her husband, Neil, with his training company.

Originally from Wrexham in North Wales and now living in Catterick Garrison near Scotch Corner, Mr Carter’s most recent position with Glasgow-based McCurrach was key account manager for news but he also held posts working with the field marketing agency’s Unilever teams – all giving him valuable experience in the convenience and multiple channels.

Craig Brown, Filshill’s chief sales and marketing officer, said: “Under the leadership of Jeanette Gordon and Graham Cairns, we have built strong momentum for the KeyStore brand in the north of England and we want to build on that as more retailers choose KeyStore as the best solution for achieving increased profit and margin.

“Arwel will now work with Graham to stimulate growth and increase profitability in a competitive convenience marketplace that continues to evolve and throw up challenges while helping them retain the flexibility to run their stores the way they want to while offering a point of difference over their competitors.

“His knowledge of the territory will be invaluable and his involvement with a local football club shows that he share’s the strong sense of community that both Filshill and KeyStore adhere to.”

Mr Carter, who joined the Army when he left school, had his first introduction to Filshill and the KeyStore brand after meeting Tony Hewson, a KeyStore Express retailer in Middleham, through football.

“I got to know Tony through my time working in ice cream with Unilever at McCurrach and we now run a football club together – AFC Middleham Town,” he explained. “We got chatting and I found out about the Filshill position through Tony.

“McCurrach has been fantastic in giving me a toolkit and skill set in retail but I want to broaden my experience and I needed a new challenge – I’m really looking forward to meeting all our customers in the region and bringing new ones into the Filshill and KeyStore family.”

Filshill, one of Scotland’s oldest independent food and drink wholesalers, saw turnover increase to £200 million – up 4.4% from £191 million – in the year ending January 31, 2022. The company will move to its new distribution centre near Glasgow Airport in the first quarter of 2023.
