lorien.jpgLorien Engineering Solutions has been awarded a top safety accolade by a leading health and safety accreditation scheme. The Midlands-based engineering design and product management specialist has become one of a select band of companies to have been accredited for the fourth year running by SAFEcontractor, a programme that recognises high standards of health and safety practise amongst UK contractors and professionals.

Employing 70 staff, Lorien is principally involved in the engineering design and project management of capital investment projects within the hygienic manufacturing sectors of brewing, drinks, foods, healthcare and pharmaceutical. With a projects turnover of £100m per annum, Lorien provides services to many of the world’s brand-leading companies.

Bill Treddenick, Operations Director for Lorien said, “We value the accreditation from SAFEcontractor. The annual review and audit process is very thorough and exacting, but in continuing to succeed in our accreditation we are seeing year-on-year improvements spread within our business that then is carried outside to the contracting companies we employ. These days it’s all about the ‘pyramid of competence’ in projects, and it is very necessary for Lorien to be able to prove this competence”.

“We are also proud that in 2008 we became one of the first registered CDM Coordinator practices within the UK. This involves another tough audit process, but our ISO work, and SAFEcontractor audits have thoroughly tested our H&S management system.”

SAFEcontractor accreditation enhances the company’s ability to attract new contracts and its commitment to safety. SAFEcontractor is operated by international safety, health and environmental risk management specialists, the National Britannia Group. The system is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food manufacture, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contractors and professional services.

Darren Hughes, Operations Director for SAFEcontractor at National Britannia said, “Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies”.

“More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that Lorien Engineering Solutions has done. The firms’ high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.”

Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website, www.safecontractor.com

Employer organisations which sign up to the scheme can access the database, which enables them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These employers agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over 100 major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors and professional companies.
