A leading Scottish convenience retailer is extending its support of home-grown produce with the introduction of several new Scottish suppliers.

Scotmid has added 23 new products to its store listings, which will be available to purchase from this month (September).

With potatoes grown in Montrose, gin distilled in Glasgow and a dessert made with Scottish Raspberries, the products will all deliver a premium taste of Scotland (some with a twist) to Scotmid customers.

The move further underpins the retailer’s ambitions to establish valuable partnerships with suppliers and reinforces its efforts to provide exciting, top quality, locally sourced products, which respond to the changing needs and shopping trends of consumers.

From chilled and ambient products to canned alcoholic drinks, from both recognised and lesser-known brands, the list of new suppliers includes:

  • Golden Cross Party Wheels: Cheese & Onion, Hot & Spicy (185 stores)
  • Duncan’s Shortbread: Coconut, Double Chocolate Chip, Salted Caramel (116 stores)
  • Confectious: Fudge N Fantastic Bag, Irresistibly Tablet Bag (73 stores)
  • Bon Accord: Rhubarb Soda, Ginger Beer (24 stores)
  • Baxter’s Souperlicious Soup: Cream of Tomato, Carrot & Coriander (48 stores)
  • MacSween’s: Breakfast Sausages, Breakfast Black Pudding (72 stores)
  • Strathmore Sponge Puddings: Raspberry, Tablet (69 stores)

  • Glaswegin: Pre-mixed Gin & Tonic and Raspberry & Rhubarb Gin & Tonic (178 stores)
  • Edinburgh Gin: Negroni Spritz, Lemon Spritz (178 stores)

The launch comes at a time when the country prepares to celebrate all things Scottish on the global food and drink scene, during Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight (2nd – 16th September).

Mark Nicholson, Business Development Manager from Glaswegin said: “We are thrilled that we have been chosen by Scotmid to introduce our new, pre-mixed drinks cans into their stores. Given the rise in popularity for ready-made drinks, we’re excited for our products to be on the shelves of a leading Scottish convenience retailer, bringing our new flavours to communities across the country.”

Jessica van Tromp, Local Sourcing Manager at Scotmid said, “As a convenience retailer, based in the heart of communities, we are passionate about supporting suppliers across Scotland, helping them to showcase their exciting and innovative products amongst our customers.

“This latest round of supplier listings builds on the highly successful partnerships we already have in place, and we’re excited to be working with even more great quality local businesses based on our doorstep.”

CASE STUDY: Stirling Potatoes – Upper Dysart Chorizo Mash

Stirling Potatoes is a proud Scottish, family-run business. Aged between 21 and 29, Jessica, Hannah and James work alongside founders (and mum and dad), Anita and Andrew, to produce a range of fine quality potato products, such as the new Upper Dysart Chorizo Mash.

Stirling Potatoes is thrilled to see Upper Dysart Chorizo Mash coming on to Scotmid shelves. The product has been created in such a way that it is helping both retailers and consumers to minimise fresh food waste, with the introduction of a unique, longer-serving shelf life. The development follows a breakthrough made in Scandinavia, which enables the shelf life of fresh products to be lengthened without adding preservatives.

Andrew Stirling, founder of Stirling Potatoes said: “As a family we are thrilled that our chorizo mash will soon be available to communities across the country. With a shelf-life of 35 days, and with no additives, we’re so excited for Scotmid customers to taste a high quality, traditional Scottish product with a tasty modern twist.”

Daughter Jessica added, “We recognise the problem of food and plastic waste and as producers we wanted to provide something that can help make a difference, without impacting on taste. It is great for us to bring locally sourced produce with a longer shelf-life to customers, who we’re confident will welcome the opportunity to reduce waste.”

The Stirling’s expect the family favourite will be well received, with the fresh, easy to make mash providing a great accompaniment to a variety of dishes to create a truly heart-warming meal.

Stirling Potatoes is already developing a range of exciting new chilled soups and ready meals with a 30 day plus shelf life, with the ambition of bringing them to Scotmid stores in the near future.

Andrew said: “This listing is a really valuable opportunity for us. As a still relatively small Scottish business, the exposure this listing will give us will help us to move forward with our growth and new product development plans as well as acting as a springboard to introducing our innovative products to new audiences. It’s a very exciting time and we’re eager to see where the relationship with Scotmid may take us.”
